After the Allies successfully landed in North Africa, Canadian corvettes became part of an escort effort to ensure that land forces were resupplied. Among these was the Ville de Quebec, built in Quebec City and commissioned 24 May 1942. On January 13, 1943, Ville de Quebec was escorting a 15-ship convoy in the Mediterranean when ASDIC operator Stanley Mill reported a submarine presence on the starboard bow. It was U-224. This submarine had been built in Kiel, Germany, and was commissioned on 20 June 1942. The U-boat had slipped through the narrow strait at Gibraltar, when clouds hid the moonlight. It had been sighted in that dangerous passage but escaped attack.

The Ville de Quebec attacked immediately, firing a pattern of 10 depth charges in a diamond pattern, damaging the U-Boat to the degree that it had to surface. The corvette’s guns opened fire keeping the Germans from manning their deck gun. The captain ordered the ship to ram the submarine. The crew reported hearing “a grinding noise on our hull and then a loud explosion to our stern.” U-224 went down and exploded underwater. There was only one survivor, First Lieutenant Wolf- Dietrich Danckworth. The convoy ships blew their whistles in tribute. The sinking was widely publicized. The Ville de Quebec was visited by admirals and dignitaries, including Vice-Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten and back in England by the King and Queen. The corvette's captain T/Lt.Cdr. A.R.E. Coleman of Montreal received the DSO.

After the war the Ville de Quebec was decommissioned 6 July 1945, sold into mercantile service in 1946 and renamed Dispina. Its honoured name is still carried on one of Canada's patrol frigates today. One former corvette, HMCS (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) Sackville was saved from the wrecker's yard and restored as a floating tribute to all the ships and men who had served. HMCS Sackville is now moored dockside in Halifax Harbour, in the bright white and blue dazzle camouflage paint scheme she once wore in the North Atlantic.

The only survivor of the entire class is HMCS Sackville (K181), owned by the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust. She was laid up in reserve in March 1946 and converted in 1952 to a research vessel for Canadian Department of Marine and Fisheries, a role she served in until the early 1980s when she was acquired by the trust.[13] She has been restored to her wartime appearance and serves the summer months as a museum ship on loan to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, while wintering securely in the naval dockyard at CFB Halifax under the care of Maritime Forces Atlantic, Maritime Command. Sackville's presence in Halifax is considered very appropriate, given the port was an important North American convoy assembly port during the war. Sackville makes her first appearance each spring when she is towed by a naval tug from HMC Dockyard to a location off Point Pleasant Park on the first Sunday in May to participate in the Commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic ceremonies held at a memorial in the park overlooking the entrance to Halifax Harbour. Sackville typically hosts several dozen RCN veterans on this day and has also participated in several burials at sea for dispersing the ashes of RCN veterans of the Battle of the Atlantic at this location.

The Story of HMCS Ville de Quebec

Most ships of the Canadian fleet in the Second World War were named after cities or towns, so it was natural that the name of Quebec should be chosen, but because it was already in use in the Royal Navy, the Canadian vessel became HMCS Ville de Quebec.

She was a "Flower" class corvette, 203 feet long, 33 feet in the beam and drawing 13 feet of water. She was driven by one triple expansion reciprocating engine of 2750 horse-power giving her a top speed of sixteen knots. She was armed with one 4-inch gun, one 2-pounder pom-pom and two 0.5 inch machine guns. The latter were replaced after some time by six 20mm Oerlikon guns. The anti-submarine weapons were depth-charges launched from four throwers or rolled over the stern through two traps.

Ville de Quebec was built by the Morton Engineering and Dry Dock Co. in her namesake city. Her keel was laid on June 7, 1941, she was launched on November 12, completed and commissioned of May 24, 1942. She sailed for Halifax on June 6, and after a brief period for final additions to her equipment and some training for her crew, she sailed on her first operational cruise on July 6. Allocated to the Western Local Escort Force, her duties took her south to Boston or New York and north to St. John's, Newfoundland, escorting convoys. The tide of war, however, was on the turn and in the fall Ville de Quebec was ordered overseas to take part in Operation TORCH, the allied invasion of North Africa.

It is actually comforting to hear that you understand the connection between the past and present VILLE DE QUEBEC. Few outside of the "Naval Family' do. Today's ships still carry the Battle Honours of their predecessors and for some of us, the salute we give when crossing the brow is as much for the flag as for the memory of those who never came home yet contributed to the earning of those Honours.

As well, so you know, the original Flower class corvette HMCS VILLE DE QUEBEC (K242) was not simply 'sold for scrap'. She served as a merchant ship post World War II:
Dispina-1946;
Dorothea Paxos - 1947;
Tanya - 1948; and
Medex - 1949 and remained on Lloyd's Registry until 1952! (Under which flags, unfortunately, I do not know) (Σχολιο γραφοντος: Με Ελληνικη σημαια φιλε μας)

By Lindsey Cole
The Oshawa Express

The HCMS Ville De Quebec is making its way to Oshawa in late September. Councillor Robert Lutczyk says there will be around 220 sailors aboard the massive ship as well as a 20-crew support. It will be reminiscent of the HMCS Charlottetown, which came to Oshawa last year.“It’s exciting to have a ship like that,” he says, adding it will be free to tour at the Oshawa harbour. Last year, thousands came to see the HMCS Charlottetown and he expects it to be the same this September.

The Ville De Quebec is 203 feet long, 33 feet in the beam and draws 13 feet of water. It was built by the Morton Engineering and Dry Dock Co., states the Navy Forces website. The ship was completed and commissioned on May 24, 1942. It is a piece of Canada’s history.
“It’s a great opportunity for the residents to come and see their navy up close.”

Apparently Lindsay Cole didn't do her homework properly... I won't even touch the fact she has what one could discern as HMCS preceded by "The."

In any case, VDQ is going to Oshawa in September. I hope she stops off at RMC to give us lowly NCdts a quick tour.

Well done to the Oshawa Express...you have a star reporter there....

Mια αναφορά στο MEDEX σαν μικρό, σκουριασμένο και κουρασμένο σκάφος

we traveled to the town of Bari in southern Italy. Three days later we embarked on the “Medex”, a small ship, which was to take us to the shores of Israel. Even I, who never before sailed on a ship, could see how small, rusty, and worn-out that boat was. And we were two hundred youth on its deck! Despite our apprehension, our boat made its way across the Mediterranean, and after a week managed to get into the port of Haifa. πηγή (http://www.furststory.com/English/PostWarNaftali.html)
