MSC blames collision bulker

MSC HAS firmly placed the blame for the collision that has closed two key Indian ports on another company's bulker.

The 45,798dwt bulker Khalijia-3 caused the collision with the 2,314teu MSC Chitra off Mumbai, Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping insisted in a statement.

Quadrant Maritime, which manages the bulker, was not available to rebut the MSC accusation, when contacted today by Fairplay.

?It would appear that under the rules of navigation the Khalijia-3 was significantly in error, said MSC, basing that conclusion on its preliminary review of its ship's black box recorder. Chitra, the company said, had been properly proceeding outbound within the main navigation channel when the casualty occurred.

For reasons not known to us, Khalijia-3 unexpectedly continued turning to port and came back to cross the fairway again, MSC said.

This caused the bulker to strike Chitra on the box ship's port side while it was still properly navigating in the main channel, said MSC, which added that it awaited the results of a full inquiry.
