Here is a special one for my friend Henry Casciaro!

The famous Atlantic that became equally famous as a moving University!

She was a cruises ship, but also for a short time a transatlantic liner, as shown in the June 21, 1960 Greek ad that is presented below!

Yes, the ship was built as a freighter back in 1953 with the name Badger Mariner. She was converted to a passenger/cruise ship in 1957. She belonged to the American Banner Lines (1957), American Export Lines (1959), and American Export Isbrandtsen Lines (1964)

Universe Campus ex Atlantic was built in 1953 as the cargo ship Badger Mariner. She was bought by American Banner Lines and refitted as a passenger ship, entering service as the Atlantic between New York and Amsterdam in 1958.

She was bought by American Export Lines in 1960, used on New York-Mediterranean services, until laid up in 1968. In 1971 she was sold to C.Y. Tung's Orient Overseas Line, and renamed Universe Campus (shortened to Universe in 1976).

She was scrapped in 1996, after her boilers failed, having only recently received a major internal refurbishment.

The Badger Mariner had two other C4 Mariner class sisters which were also converted to passenger ships. The first one Free State Mariner, and the second Pine Tree Mariner both built in 1952. Both were bought by Matson Lines in 1955 and the first one was converted to Mariposa, and the second one an identical conversion was named Monterey, both destined for the Matson's S. Pacific route. In 1970 the ships were bought by Pacific Far East Lines, and in 1989 Monterey was purchased by Star Lauro. In 1995 she was passed to the affiliate company MSC and in 2007 following serious mechanical broblems was scrapped at Alang. There was a fourth sister Palmetto Mariner which was never converted to passenger ship as the rest of the C4 freighter Mariner class ships of the U.S Merchant Marine.

Nicholas and QAM here is the only photo I have of her calling at Gibraltar, presumably on a positioning voyage during the late 70's (taken by a friend of mine). She was a sleek liner and had an interesting career.

Beautiful picture Henry. Although she was not one of the most striking ships in the Atlantic and was designed as a tourist class ship, something like the Ryndam and Maasdam of HAL, she had character. She was not successful in the North Atlantic run with Banner Lines but after her sale to American Export Lines for the N. York to Mediterranean ports she became quite successful.

The ship ATLANTIC was advertised a lot in Greece in her early days after she was converted from cargo ship to oceanliner.

here is a nice ad from April 12, 1960 when the ship was doing the Piraeus to New York route...

Enterprising agents were finding special ways to attract passengers in their ships when sea travel had started being less desirable.... For the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the agnets of American Export Lines were presenting ATLANTIC as a means of going to Naples (and then Rome) to watch the Olympics (here an ad from August 19, 1960).

These (and the 1956 Melbourne Games) were the Olympic Games of my youth. They started on August 25 and finished on September 11, 1960. There were some memorable events at the Games. Of course the win of Abebe Bikila in the marathon. Australian Herb Elliott mesmerized the field in the 1500 meters. And who will ever forget the German Armin Harry in the 100 meters dash and the Italian Livio Berruti in the 200 meters? And of course the Greeks had a nice gold medal in sailing (with Nereus, a Dragon class boat) with then Crown Prince Constantine (1940- ) and Odysseus Eskitzoglou (1932- , see him now as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL2ioNQIHXc) and Yorgos Zaimis (1937- )...

146453 Όντως ήταν τότε τακτικός επισκέπτης του Πειραιά σαν πλωτό πανεπιστήμιο. Προσωπικά μου άρεσε που ήταν χτισμένο πάνω σε σκάφος φορτηγού τύπου Mariner.

Σε συνέχεια της προηγού μενης φωτογραφίας, να δούμε άλλη μια πόζα του πλοίου στον Πειραιά του '70. Αργότερα ταξίδευε κυρίως στην Αμερική.

To UNIVERSE EXPLORER πέρναγε από το 1996 τα καλοκαίρια του στην Αλάσκα κάνοντας κρουαζιέρες για τη World Explorer Cruises και τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο έκανε εκπαιδευτικά ταξίδια ανά τον κόσμο ναυλωμένο στο Institute of Shipboard Education. Από το 2003 η ναύλωση έγινε ετήσια αλλά σταμάτησε το 2004 όταν το Ινστιτούτο ναύλωσε το πρώην «δικό μας» EXPLORER.

Τότε η World Explorer Cruises θέλησε να το ανακαινήσει για να το επαναφέρει σε κρουαζιέρες στην Αλάσκα αλλά το κόστος τελικά το οδήγησε στην παραλία του Αλάνγκ …
