Το ΜΑΡΙΑ ΚΟΣΜΑΣ ήταν μετασκευή ενός ωκεανογραφικού του Αυστραλιανού Π.Ν. ΄

Όταν το πλοίο πουλήθηκε, μετά από χρόνια παροπλισμού στην Ελευσίνα, κατέληξε στο Dubai για να μετασκευαστεί ως mega yacht με το όνομα СOSMOS. Η μετασκευή άρχισε το 2005 και θα τελειώνε φέτος.

Στη φωτο φαίνονται το ΑΤΑΛΑΝΤΗ και τα Princessa Marissa, Νήσος Κύπρος, Sea Wave και Sea Harmony.

Σε κρουαζιέρα ήταν τότε? Ρωτάω γιατί έχω την εντύπωση πως κάποια στιγμή ταξίδεψε και σε τακτικά δρομολόγια Ελλάδα-Κύπρο.

Ξεκινούσε από Πειραιά-Τήνο-Πάτμο-Λεμεσσό-Χάιφα-Λεμεσσό-Μυτιλήνη-Τήνο-Πειραιά.

Ναι είχανε στόλο στη ποντοπόρο ο Κώστας καραφωτιας είχε παντρευτεί την αδερφή των αφοι Κοσμά αυτό είναι σίγουρο για την Βεργίνα lines αν υπήρχανε άλλοι με αυτό το όνομα δεν το γνωρίζω ???

Polyka εχεις ταξιδεψει με το Μαρια Κοσμας? Ερχοταν καθε Παρασκευη στην Πατμο, και συνηθως σφυριζε κατα την αναχωρηση. Ειχε μια πολυ ωραια σφυριχτρα! Αν θυμαμαι καλα, το πλοιο ηταν κατασκευασμενο για το Αυστραλιανο Ναυτικο, με το ονομα HMAS Cook.

Μάλλον έτσι είναι, με καλές γραμμές, πολύ καθαρό στο μηχ/σιο, πολύ καθαρές λαμαρίνες, με κατερπιλαρ, με προπέλα 360 μοιρών στην πλώρη, το κινούσε μέχρι 6 κ, χωρίς πρωοστήριες, με στενή γέφυρα φορτωμένη.
Από καμπίνες δεν ήταν κάτι ιδιαίτερο, αλλά οι υπόλοιποι χώροι ήταν αρκετά συμπαθητικοί με πισίνα κλειστή/ανοιχτή κλπ.

Ηταν απο τα αγαπημένα μικρά της κρουαζιέρας.

Στην πιο πάνω φωτο, νομίζω είναι μετά την Ελευσίνα, υπήρχαν φήμες ότι θα ξαναέβγαινε στην δουλειά, αλλά μάλλον πήγε αλλού.

Thought it would be a good idea to revive this thread with some pages and photos taken from a Vergina Cruise Lines brochure which included an interesting and unusual group of vessels. Apart from the Raffaello and Valentino which were converted ferries (probably of Japanese origin) and used on Adriatic routes the Vergina Sky and Maria Kosmas did complete several cruise seasons although with limited success.

Perhaps Aris can throw some light on this company as it seems to have had connections with the owners of Queen Eleni (Oriana Cruise Lines of Cyprus) as part of the 'K' of Cycladic Cruises City of Rhodos was used to form the V on the funnel of Queen Eleni later Queen Constantina (see City of Rhodos thread).

Also some of the brochure pages are very similar to the Cycladic Cruises brochures of the early 90's (however this could be either a coincidence or the fact that they copied their brochure content).

They did owned the ferries VERGINA, QUEEN VERGINA, VALENTINO and RAFFAELLO (in Greece-Italy run as well in Italy-Haifa via Greece, Cyprus) but they used to run under the Vergina Lines banner. Previously the run under the Stability Lines banner.

I am not aware with any ties with the Kyrtatas family who owned Cycladic Cruises. The resemblance must be a coincidence.

The QUEEN ELENI was their last cruise ship, but I have never heard of the Oriana Cruise Line name before. Did they used to market her under this company name?

Aris here are two of the brochures I have published by Oriana Cruise Lines. Am sure this was the trading name of the Cypriot company that bought the Queen Eleni. Interesting though as they semmed to have operated other ferries too (Carla? never heard of her before although her profile looks familiar). I suppose they have nothing to do with the later owners of the same vessel (New Marathon Lines) when she was renamed Queen Constantina.....all very confusing!

Do you think its worth opening a new thread for this company and another for Vergina Cruise Lines?

This is very interesting Henry!
CARLA was a former Danish ferry, that operated around Greece in the early 90s. Check here (http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showthread.php?t=38156&highlight=victory). I would never imagine that she could be marketed as a cruise ship... A photo of CARLA is available here (http://www.faktaomfartyg.se/carla_1959_b_1.htm).

The New Marathon firm was owned by Trohides, formerly know as the owner of Afroessa Lines that used to operate the ferries PALOMA and SILVER PALOMA in the 90s.

I have two comments for the rather ugly and built up at the stern converted little ship: Note the VERGINA CRUISES (!) LINES on the sides, and the fact that there is only one anchor on the tip of the bow. The interior photos of the vessel show a low budget operation not up to par with other cruise companies.

You are right QAM she was an ugly little ship and definitely a low budget operation together with Vergina Sky and all the other ferries of this company. However the MK remains an intereseting vessel from the point of view that she was formerly a military research vessel for the Australian Navy and I think this was the reason for that strange lone anchor on her bow!

I actually went on board when I took the above photos and as you say her interiors were very low quality but there was still something cosy and strangely pleasant about her, although I don't think I would have taken a cruise on her!

The conversion of MARIA KOSMAS into the mega yacht COSMOS has apparently fallen throught...



Was to be converted from research vessel to private yacht by Platinum Yachts. Work started in 2006, but conversion stopped has now stopped (2009).

Thanks Despo for these two great photos. Shame she was'nt a very handsome ship, albeit a converted research vessel! Still there was something mildly attractive about her profile even though QAM would disagree with me here! In any case she was never a successful cruise ship as I don't think her owning company ever took it very seriously, they were more of a ferry operator.

Να δούμε εδώ το πλοίο όταν το 1986 ως αυστραλιανό ωκεανογραφικό φιλοξένησε τους επίσημους κατά τους εορτασμούς για τα 75 χρόνια του ΠΝ της Αυστραλίας. Στην πρώτη το βλέπουμε δίπλα στο USS MISSOURI και στη δεύτερη, από το αμερικάνικο θωρηκτό με τους ναύτες να αποδίδουν τιμές.

Η ναυπήγηση του COOK πήρε έξι χρόνια (1974-80) και χρειάστηκαν άλλα δυο για να διορθωθούν τα μηχανικά προβλήματα που το ταλαιπωρούσαν. Κρίνοντας από το οτι το 1990 το πούλησαν στον Κοσμά, μάλλον δεν τους βγήκε ως κατασκευή.
