Greek Challenge made history today by engaging for the first time with another LVPS team in the waters of Auckland’s Waitamata Harbour and winning. They finished Thursday’s practice session more upbeat than any other team, because they obtained an advantage over BMW Oracle during their light air practice session this morning. Was it a fluke, or will they be able to repeat the performance in their first matchup in the Round Robin series against Alinghi on Friday afternoon?
Little is known about Greek Challenge CEO, Sotiris Buseas’ herculean effort to build the nascent syndicate. The syndicate is inspired by Poseidon, the powerful Greek God of the sea who proffers calm seas when happy and pacified, but can cause earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks with a disgruntled pounding of his trident. So far, Poseidon has been on his best behavior and all is calm in Auckland as Buseas and his team continue up their steep learning curve.
Miracle of miracles, the Greek Challenge has a full complement, especially now that former BMW Oracle helmsman, Gavin Brady has had time to shake off his jetlag. With Brady, their stature is elevated, because like Emirates Team New Zealand, BMW Oracle Racing and Alinghi, Greek Challenge has a Kiwi in the afterguard.
The Greek Challenge has been part of the 33rd America’s Cup meetings in Valencia and practiced there during the middle of January. Their first two days in Valencia were all about match racing theory. Theory was followed by an introductory safety session and time in an ACC boat.
The Greeks turned to ISAF #1-ranked match race skipper, Sebastien Col and his World Match Racing Team colleagues for on the water coaching in the Pataugas K-Challenge boat. Nervous at first, Col was impressed with the Greek team. All are very good sailors in their own disciplines, but aside from Marc Lagesse, they had never sailed an America’s Cup class boat before. To everyone’s surprise, the total immersion ACC training sessions worked well and Patugas K-Challenge’s boat was no worse for the wear when the rest of the K-Challenge team arrived in Valencia for pre-LVPS training.
As we approached the commencement of the LVPS, all sailors are praying to the Poseidon for safe voyages. So far, so good, and there has been no need for sacrifices to the temperamental divinity.
The Greek Challenge team roster for the event will be announced at a press conference before teams take to the waters of Waitemata Harbour for the start of the Round Robin Series on Friday morning.

Auckland, NZ - A new chapter in sailing history was written on Saturday on the waters of Auckland’s harbor. For the first time ever, a Greek team won a race in a sailing event of America's Cup level. Despite lacking the years of experience in the America’s Cup and the world match racing circuits, Greek Challenge beat Shosholoza, a South African team whose afterguard is composed of Italian match race champions.
With a brisk southwestern breeze and two aggressive match racers, Gavin Brady and Paolo Cian, the prestart was guaranteed to be spectacular and close. And so it did. Not only did Brady manage to put a hold on the ambitions of the Italian match race champion, he also forced him to receive a penalty for a classic port-starboard incident.
Once the Greek boat crossed the starting line ahead and clear of Shosholoza, the key was to keep them close, whether they were behind or ahead. And this is what Gavin Brady did. Paolo Cian threw a fierce tacking duel in the first beat but Greek Challenge on NZL-92 replied perfectly, rounding the first weather mark 30 seconds ahead of Shosholoza.
In the first run, Paolo Cian put even more pressure on the Greeks, pushing them to the right side of the course but again the Greek-Kiwi crew showed its ever improving skills, despite having sailed on America’s Cup yachts for less than 2 weeks. Yet, Shosholoza managed to reduce the Greek lead and rounded the leeward gate 21 seconds behind them.
In the second beat, and with a penalty on his shoulders, Cian had no option but try to stay far from the Greeks. While the Greek boat opted for the right side, Shosholoza distanced itself by some 800 meters at times, hoping to take advantage of a slight left shift and favorable tide. Nevertheless, once again, Greek Challenge did a good job and left Shosholoza no options for a recovery.
In the final beat Greek Challenge played it safe, stayed ahead and won the race with a 56-second lead.
With this victory, Greek Challenge is back at zero points. On Sunday, third day of the event, Greek Challenge has a bye. Another tough opponent expects the Greeks when they return on the water on Monday when Greek Challenge will have to face Luna Rossa.

Auckland, NZ – Monday, fourth day of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, was set from the beginning to be challenging for Greek Challenge. The first ever America’s Cup team from Greece faced Luna Rossa, the Louis Vuitton finalist in Valencia in 2007.
Both teams were set for a long wait before they started racing. The starting gun was scheduled to be fired at 11am but the waters of Auckland’s harbor were flat with hardly any sign of breeze. Only after waiting for almost 4 hours and moving further north were race organizers able to set a course.
The start took place under a steady easterly breeze of around 10 knots. The right side of the course was slightly favored and both teams fought hard for the committee boat end of the starting line. Gavin Brady got it but had to pay the price of starting slowly. Luna Rossa was able to get ahead with an early advantage.
The first beat was initially a long drag race on port tack to the left side of the course. Greek Challenge was behind in the first cross and despite the ever-improving teamwork, the Greeks rounded the first weather mark 27 seconds behind the Italians. During the rest of the race, Greek Challenge stayed on Luna Rossa’s trail but, unfortunately, was unable to pass them, crossing the finish line only 54 seconds behind the Italian yacht.
According to Gavin Brady, the New Zealander helmsman of the Greek team, “this was probably the best race of the team so far. Crew work was excellent; gybes were fantastic, even better than Luna Rossa’s. Unlike the first race against Alinghi, Luna Rossa was never able to distance itself and Greek Challenge was 1 or 2 errors away from winning. One bad spinnaker hoist or another crew fault could have allowed us to make headway on the deficit we had. It wasn’t impossible to get back on the game but Luna Rossa sailed flawlessly”.
Tuesday is the final day of Round Robin 1 and Greek Challenge will have to face Team Origin, unbeaten so far. With triple Olympic medalist Ben Ainslie on the helm and an Olympic and America’s roster on the British yacht, Greek Challenge will certainly have a very tough opponent.

Kάθε αρχή και δύσκολη. Μπράβο πάντως για την προσπάθεια των παιδιών της ελληνικής ομάδας. Επιτέλους η Ελλάδα έτρεξε στον αγώνα του cup Louis Vuittonnnnnnnn .... αλοίμονο από μας !!! άντε πλησιάζει και ο πρώτος ο δικός μας της Υδρας :-P
Η GREEΚ CHALLENGE γιόρτασε πέρυσι τα 4 χρόνια της και ένα πολύ πετυχημένο 2009.

Με την ευκαιρία της 4ης επετείου δημιουργίας μας γιορτάζουμε ένα πολύ πετυχημένο 2009 και ανακοινώνουμε τη δημιουργία 2 βάσεων στην Ελλάδα με στόχο τη περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη της ομάδας μας και προετοιμασίας μας για το 34ο ΑC.
2.3 εκατομμύρια Ευρώ θα επενδυθούν για την δημιουργία υποδομής σε δύο λιμάνια στην Ελλάδα για να υποδεχτούν τη GREEΚ CHALLENGE και άλλες ομάδες AC. Η ομάδα μας έχει ήδη υποβάλλει αιτήσεις και σχέδια στις Λιμενικές Αρχές και περιμένει την θετική τους απάντηση ως το τέλος Ιανουαρίου του 2010.

2010 - Μια καινούργια αρχή
Το 2010 ξεκίνησε πολύ συναρπαστικά για την ομάδα GC. Όσον αφορά το άθλημα, ο Gavin Brady, ο Chris Larson και ο Σωτήρης Μπουζέας έλαβαν μέρος σε προπονητικούς ιστιοπλοϊκούς αγώνες στην Αννάπολη των Η.Π.Α. 29 Ιανουαρίου με θερμοκρασίες στο Μέριλαντ να κυμαίνονται αρκετά κάτω από το μηδέν (-11°C). Η αποφασιστικότητα, σε συνδυασμό με έναν καλό προγραμματισμό, παίζει σπουδαίο ρόλο στην επιτυχία. Ο Gavin Brady (ο πρώτος πηδαλιούχος της GC) και ο Σωτήρης Μπουζέας συζήτησαν για το μέλλον της ομάδας, το America's Cup (AC), καθώς και την προοπτική η GC να λάβει μέρος στον ιστιοπλοϊκό αγώνα Volvo Ocean Race, σε περίπτωση που το AC συνεχίσει να αποτελεί αντικείμενο δικαστικών διενέξεων.
Ενώ η ομάδα GC θα ετοιμάζει τις βάσεις της στην Ελλάδα και τη διοργάνωση μιας διεθνούς ρεγκάτας, ο Gavin Brady θα βρίσκεται στο πηδάλιο της ιστιοπλοϊκής ομάδας "Mascalzone Latino" (ο καινούργιος διεκδικητής [COR] του τίτλου στο 34ο AC) που θα λάβει μέρος στους ιστιοπλοϊκούς αγώνες του LVT (Louis Vuitton Trophy) στο Όκλαντ της Νέας Ζηλανδίας και στη Λα Μανταλένα της Ιταλίας.
GREEΚ CHALLENGE στο AC33
Η GC ήταν μία από τις τρεις ομάδες που προσκλήθηκαν στο επίσημο δείπνο, το οποίο παράθεσε στις 6 Φεβρουαρίου ο φορέας διοργάνωσης του 33ου AC. Ξεκίνησαν οι συνομιλίες όσον αφορά τη περαιτέρω μελλοντική συνεργασία με τον Ναυτικό Όμιλο της Γενεύης (SNG) και τον Ιστιοπλοϊκό Όμιλο του GSTAAD (GYC), ενώ σε μια σύντομη συνάντηση με τον Marcus Young, πρόεδρο του Ιστιοπλοϊκού Ομίλου Γκόλντεν Γκέιτ (GGYC) και νέου υπερασπιστή του τίτλου της διοργάνωσης, η GC εξέθεσε την άποψη της σχετικά με το μέλλον των διεκδικητών, το 34ο AC καθώς και το επιχειρηματικό μοντέλο της επόμενης διοργάνωσης.
Το AC33 αποτέλεσε την πιο καθοριστική διοργάνωση στην ιστορία του κυπέλλου, καθιερώνοντας νέα δεδομένα, όπως το ενδεχόμενο διοργάνωσης των επόμενων αγώνων με σκάφη πολλαπλών κυτών (multihull), την επιστροφή του κυπέλλου στις Η.Π.Α. μετά από "περιπλάνηση" 30 ετών, καθώς και το ενδεχόμενο να διεξάγονται παράλληλα οι αγώνες μεταξύ των υπερασπιστών [Defender series] και οι αγώνες μεταξύ των διεκδικητών [Challenger Series] του τίτλου.
Η GC συγχαίρει την ομάδα "BMW Oracle Racing" για τη νίκη της και την ομάδα Alinghi για την φιλοξενία της κατά τη διάρκεια της διοργάνωσης του AC33, μιας εκδήλωσης με καθοριστική σημασία για το μέλλον του πρωταθλήματος. Με το ίδιο σκεπτικό, ευχόμαστε το 34ο AC να αποτελέσει αγώνα συμφιλίωσης όπου θα κυριαρχεί η ευγενής άμιλλα, να επαναφέρει την ενότητα μεταξύ των μελών της ιστιοπλοϊκής κοινότητας και να προσελκύσει ξανά το ενδιαφέρον όλου του κόσμου.
ΕΛΛΑΔΑ
Η GC έχει εξασφαλίσει την άδεια για μία από τις δύο βάσεις για τις οποίες υπέβαλε αίτηση, ενώ η δεύτερη βρίσκεται ακόμη σε διαδικασία έγκρισης. Είμαστε βέβαιοι ότι μέχρι το τέλος του καλοκαιριού οι πρώτες της βάσεις για τη διεξαγωγή αγώνων AC στην Ελλάδα θα είναι γεγονός. Οι τοποθεσίες που θα είναι εγκατεστημένες θα αναβαθμίζουν το άθλημα και θα ενισχύουν την προβολή της Ελλάδας στη διεθνή κοινότητα. Από την μία, η διεξαγωγή διεθνών ιστιοπλοϊκών αγώνων θα αυξήσει τον τουρισμό στην υπέροχη χώρα μας και από την άλλη, η προπόνηση των φιλοξενούμενων ομάδων καθώς και η αναμέτρηση τους με την GC θα συμβάλλει δυναμικά στην άνθιση του αθλήματος. Οι Έλληνες αθλητές θα πρέπει να βελτιώσουν και να αναβαθμίσουν την αγωνιστική τους δεξιοτεχνία. Έτσι, θα φτάσουν στο επίπεδο των καλύτερων ιστιοπλόων του κόσμου και θα τους αντιμετωπίσουν επάξια σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο κατά την διεξαγωγή του 34ου America’s Cup και άλλων αγώνων. Πιστεύουμε ότι το άθλημα της ιστιοπλοΐας θα είναι ο επόμενος τομέας, στον οποίο η Ελλάδα θα καταξιωθεί παγκοσμίως μέσα στην επόμενο δεκαετία, συνεχίζοντας μια παράδοση 5000 χρόνων στη ναυτιλία καθώς και την ένδοξη πορεία των Ελλήνων αθλητών τα τελευταία χρόνια. Ο Οδυσσέας ξεκινά ένα καινούργιο ταξίδι. Είστε έτοιμοι για τη νέα πρόκληση;
