Hello Friends
Enjoy this image from a famous Greek immigration ship, the S/S ASSIMINA.
I can find on the internet lots of articles of her as a famous and important immigration ship that operated to Australia, however none about her history...so all infomation you may have is highly appreciated.
Looking forward for your postcards, and in the meantime...keep well!!!;)

ASSIMINA had a rather short career under Greek ownership and it seems peculiar that she is reported as a famous immigration ship.
She was bought in 1947 by J.Livanos, converted to carry passengers and renamed DERNA. She sailed briefly to South American, and in 1948 she was renamed ASSIMINA and rerouted to the Australia and New Zealand emmigrant trade. She was scrapped in 1952 at Blyth.
For her previous history as cargo liner check here (http://www.frenchlines.com/ship_en_227.php)

I agree with Ellinis this piroscafo disgraziato (as the Italians say) was not at all "famous". In fact, she had an insignificant history with Greek owners. Tzamtzis has a short presentation and photo of her as well
Here is a little more about Assimina from Peter Plowman's 1992 book "Emigrant Ships to Luxury Liners".

By the way, Assimina was not the ugliest ship. The ugliest, most abandoned and wretched vessel on this route was Hellenic Prince (thank God not a Greek one, despite her name). She was doing the Naples to Sydney route from 1949 to 1952. She was a 1924 carrier Albatross and she looked that way!!! And we thought the transatlantic emigrants suffered in the early 1900s!!! Can you imagine travelling through the Mediterranean, Souez, Red Sea and Indian Ocean in this thing for a month?

Το Assimina σαν Indiana.

European migrants to Australia aboard the ship SS Derna on their arrival in Melbourne in November 1948.
To υπό σημαία Λιβερίας ASSIMINA του Iωάννη Λιβανού με μπεζ?
