The Early Years

Neilos or Cephalonia was a heroic Greek vessel of the early days of Greek Coastal shipping with a long history. Neilos was built as Douro by Harland & Wolff of Belfast in 1864! She had a tonnage of 556 tons, a length of 59.1 m, a beam of 8.7 m and a service speed of just 9 knots.

Miramar gives very incomplete data here

She was launched in November 1864 and delivered to J. Bibby, Sons & Co on November 21, 1864. She was in the route from Liverpool to Spain and Portugal. Her engine was compounded in 1871 by G. Forrester & Co. and she was sold to Frederick Leyland & Co. on January 1, 1873, retaining the same name.

In 1875 she was renamed Alcira and in 1881 Camilla C and then Camilla. During this period 1881-92 her owner was a certain Count of Genoa, who changed her quarters to luxury ones. Then, in 1892 she was sold to Pietro Milesi of Genoa (now known as Attilio Milesi http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/it~hf.html#ampf), who retained her name.

John Bibby purchased his first ship in 1805. The company traded initially to the Mediterranean and then expanded to South America, India and the Far East. A packet service to Dublin started in 1807. In 1850 the company bought their first steamship for the Mediterranean service and in 1857 the Levant Screw Steam Shipping Co was taken over. In 1873 Bibby Line passed control of their steamers to F. R. Leyland but in 1889 the Bibby family returned to the shipping business and formed Bibby Bros Ltd with a service to Rangoon **. In 1891 the company became the Bibby SS Co, working in conjunction with Henderson Bros. Ltd. and later became heavily involved in trooping, some ships becoming permanent troopships. The company name was changed to Bibby Line Ltd in 1931 but with advent of independence for Burma, trade declined and many ships were charterd out.** The Suez crisis of 1956 effectively finished the trade to Burma, but trooping work kept the company operational. Trooping by sea ended in 1962. Passenger services ceased in 1965 and the company joined the Seabridge consortium to operate chartered vessels and in 1971 took over Bristol City Line. The company still survives, managed from Douglas, Isle of Man and is Britain's oldest family controlled company.

Presentation of the Leyland Line

Source http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/leyland.html

Frederick Leyland was a partner in the firm of Bibby Bros and started up his own company in 1873 when 21 of Bibby Bros ships were transferred to the new company. Services to Boston started in 1876. With the death of Frederick Leyland in 1892, a new company Frederick Leyland & Co Ltd was formed and began a close association between Leyland and Furness Lines. Passenger services began in 1895, and in 1896 the founding of Wilson's & Furness-Leyland Line took place to run North Atlantic services. In 1899 the West India & Pacific SS Co was taken over and ran a service from the UK to Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico ports. A Liverpool to New York service was inaugurated in 1901 and joint services to the Mediterranean were operated with G. Papayanni, Liverpool. In 1902 the company came under the control of International Mercantile Marine Co which also took over American Line, Atlantic Transport, Dominion, Red Star and White Star Lines. A rationalization of services followed this take over and Leyland withdrew from the Mediterranean and transferred many ships to Ellerman Lines, and later withdrew from the New York service. The years following WWI saw many transfers between IMMC group companies and in 1927 Leyland's two remaining passenger ships went to Red Star Line. The economic depression of the 1930s caused the sale of many ships, and by 1935 Leyland's last ship was sold and the company ceased to exist.

Routes:

* 1873-1902 Liverpool - Mediterranean.
* 1875-1934 Liverpool - Boston - Philadelphia and Liverpool - Portland, Maine.
* 1893-1914 Liverpool - Boston
* 1900-1934 Liverpool / London - Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
* 1901-1903 Liverpool - New York.

The Greek Years

1. Valianos (1894-95) In 1894 Camilla was acquired by the Valianos family (known in the trade as the A. A. Vagliano fils) of Argostoli and renamed Cephalonia.

Presentation of the Valianos (Vagliano) Line

The company known as C.S. & A.S. Vagliano purchased its first ship, the 4,702-ton, 10-knot cargo ship the Keramiai from the Napier & Miller shipyard in Glasgow in 1893. Keramiai was the name of the village of origin of the Vagliano family. In 1907, the company was renamed A.S. Vagliano. A company named A.A. Vagliano fils, of Argostoli, purchased in 1894 the Camilla and renamed her Cephalonia.

2. Diakakis (1895-1910) One year later, in 1895, she was sold to the Diakakis Line of Argostoli. The ship was named Kefallinia. Here a company schedule on August 13, 1908

36881

3. Greek Aktoploia (1910-13) In 1910 ownership was recorded as being with the Greek Aktoploïa with A. I. Diakakis as manager. The ship was already 46 years old and presented significant problems with often delays and cancellations of runs.

4. Ermoupolis (1913-14) In 1913, she was sold yet again in 1913 to the Ermoupolis Line of Syros, with E. A. Foustanos as manager. It was then that she was named Neilos (in foreign literature she often appears as Nilos). It is interesting that this same company had another Neilos from 1908-12 that they sold to Indian interests in 1912 (see next message below and also at http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showthread.php?p=258260#post258260).

5. (Italy) (1914-20) The next move is surprising. Sources claim that “in 1914 she was requisitioned by the Italian Government for use by the State Railways as a collier”. Now it is not clear how Italy could “requisition” a Greek ship that easily. But during that period, major repairs were done in her engines, perhaps even replacement.

6. Eustathiadis (1920-27) She returned to Greece and, at age 56, she was purchased by the Eustathiadis Line of N. J. Eustathiadis of Piraeus in 1920. As Neilos she was placed mostly in the Thessaloniki-Piraeus-Crete trade where she stayed most of the time. See, for example, the ad in Makedonia on July 7, 1923, which shows a very long and ambitious trip from Thessaloniki to Herakleion!

36882
(NB: It is interesting to note the name of the agent: Tzamtzis! Any relation?)

But she was also going from Thessaloniki to Kavala and Alexandroupolis as can be seen from the arrival/departure schedule of August 12, 1925.

36883

Neilos was broken up in Greece during 1927, at the advanced age of 63!.

The Other Neilos
(see also http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showthread.php?p=258260#post258260)

The other Neilos, as I like to call her, was built as the Tynesider by Schlesinger, Davis & Co, Newcastle in May 1888. She was a 1,378-ton ship owned by the Tyne Steamship Co of Newcastle, UK. In 1903 the company amalgamated with the Tees Union Shipping Co, Middlesbrough and became the Tyne-Tees Shipping Co. In 1908, Tynesider was sold to Greece (Ermoupolis Line) and named Neilos. In 1912 she was sold to India and named Faris. She was scrapped at Bombay in 1914.

Please check the name Krinos in your copy of Ploto. I do not have one. Also check the possible relation to A Kapparis who owned Eurotas during that same period.

From my side, I am leaning towards the relation of Ath. Krinos with the Ermoupolis/Neorion Line. This is a wild guess but it is supported by two pieces of information from Gelina Harlaftis' book on A History of Greek-Owned Shipping. On page 356 http://books.google.com/books?id=xLclXHW5RD4C&dq=A+History+of+Greek-Owned+Shipping&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=gtZyFkaFVf&sig=x_QdPdnnBeCP8i46UPmTWi86-Mw&hl=en&ei=OfkGSrjQNI2stgfKotj5Bg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPA356,M1 she mentions an A. she mentions Krinos as a 1912 shipowner from Syros. But so does she do about Kapparis!
