Ioanna belonged to the Veliotis Line. Eleftherios Veliotis was a smaller shipowner from Kranidi who was active in both cargo and passenger ships. At times, he had one to three passenger ships. His wife's name was Ioanna and this explains his love for ships with this name.

Following the small hint of our good friend Ellinis, Ioanna was built as a yacht, Kathleen, by Laird Brothers in Birkenhead, England. She was launched in April 1869 and had 187 tons.

She was bought by Veliotis in 1916. Argosaronikos was not her only route. On November 3, 1919, she was doing the Patras, Zante, Lixouri and Argostoli route.

Ioanna was one of the vessels that went to mandatory retirement in 1934. She should not be confused with two other Ioanna vessels of the Veliotis company.

The first one was a 555-ton cargo ship, originally known as Eastham that belonged to Zarifis and Veliotis only briefly in 1915.

Ioanna SS was a Greek Cargo Steamer of 1,192 tons built in 1901 by Ailsa Shipbuilding Company for the Shamrock Shipping Company, Larne as the Gransha SS. She was powered by a Triple Expansion 3cyl steam engine built by Muir & Houston, Glasgow. In 1919 she was acquired by Normandy Shipping. In 1923 she was acquired by Shamrock Shipping. In 1934 she was acquired by Elefherios Veliotis, Greece and renamed the Ioanna SS. On the 21st April 1941 she was sunk in a German Air Raid at Patras.

One can also see that with the mandatory scrapping of the passenger ship Ioanna in 1934, Veliotis wanted to have a new Ioanna in the family!

In the 1920s, travel to the islands of the Saronic gulf and to Argolis became a pleasant excursion of many people from Athens and Piraeus.


Ioanna of Velliotis, built in 1869 and sent for scrap in 1934, was even smaller at 179 tons! Very active in Argosaronikos in the 1920s, she had considerable service in other parts of the country as well... Here is a schedule from December 2, 1919.

It appears that Kathleen was stationed in New Zealand in the early part of her life. Here is an article from December 4, 1869 published in the Otago Witness newspaper. Clearly Kathleen was a revolutionary yacht of that period. The yacht belonged to the Marquis of Donshire

Ioanna of Velliotis, built in 1869 and sent for scrap in 1934 Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε για αυτό το μικρό πλοίο οτι παρότι πουλήθηκε για παλιοσίδερα δεν διαλύθηκε πλήρως. Το 1945 ένα τμήμα του παρέμενε και εξαιτίας της έλλειψης σκαφών, το μετέτρεψαν σε φορτηγίδα και πήρε το όνομα ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ. Ιδιοκτήτης του ήταν ο Ι. Βενετσιάνος και χρησίμευσε μέχρι που τη Πρωτομαγιά του 1960 ναυάγησε στο Ποσείδι της Χαλκιδικής, 91 χρόνια μετά τη ναυπήγηση του!

Και μια φωτογραφία από το 1932 όταν το πλοίο αποσύρθηκε επειδή το έπιασε το όριο ηλικίας.

Σε δυο διαδοχικές φωτογραφίες του Πειραιά φαίνεται από ένα τμήμα του ίδιου πλοίου που κατά πάσα πιθανότητα είναι το ΙΩΑΝΝΑ του θέματος. Ας δούμε μια απόπειρα να τις ενώσω:

Την άνοιξη του 1960 το φορτηγό πλοίο ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ λόγω κακής ορατότητας προσάραξε στην νότια ακτή του ακρωτηρίου. Έχοντας βρεθεί στο ξεκίνημα της ζωής του στους αντίποδες της σημερινής του θέσης, έφτασε στις ελληνικές θάλασσες στις αρχές του προηγούμενου αιώνα, γλιτώνοντας κατόπιν από την αναγκαστική διάλυση αλλά και από τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, για να καταλήξει τελικά, μετά από 91 χρόνια ταξιδιών, στο Ποσείδι. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το πλοίο είχε κατασκευαστεί την ίδια σχεδόν εποχή με τον φάρο που βρίσκεται εκεί για να σηματοδοτεί την είσοδο στον Θερμαϊκό κόλπο.

Για το ακτοπλοϊκό ΙΩΑΝΝΑ είχαμε γράψει πως ενώ είχε πουληθεί για διάλυση, αυτή δεν ολοκληρώθηκε παρότι το 1940 πιστοποιήθηκε στο Νηολόγιο η ολοκληρωτική του διάλυση. Έτσι το 1945 "τμήμα" του σκάφους μετατράπηκε στη φορτηγίδα ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ. Να προσθέσουμε οτι το 1947 μετατράπηκε σε δηζελοκίνητο ακτοπλοϊκό φορτηγό και έτσι το βλέπουμε 4 χρόνια αργότερα σε μερικά καρέ από την ταινία "Η Αγνή του λιμανιού" ενώ βρισκόταν στα Αμπελάκια της Σαλαμίνας. Βλέποντας το εδώ, καθώς και στην καρτ ποστάλ της Χαλκίδας εδώ (https://www.wreckhistory.com/kathleen/) βλέπουμε οτι παρέμενε η χαρακτηριστική πλώρη της θαλαμηγού που είχε και ως ΙΩΑΝΝΑ. Φαίνεται οτι το κύτος του σκάφους δεν είχε πειραχθεί από τους διαλυτές.
