Dear Friends

Dimas, thanks for a wonderful exhibition of postcards from this class of very attractive mini liners. They were indeed beautiful ships and most of them called regularly at Gibraltar.
Well done!

she laid up a long time in bremerhaven!
this is one pictures
the other picture coming soon
at this time she looking very sad and rusty
Thanks for reminding us of those lovely ships. Some of them used to call regularly at Piraeus in the 80s.
All of them saw little service after the collapse of USSR and were scrapped in the 90s with one exception. LITVA was sold in 2000 to China, renamed GREEN COAST and became a workers accommodation ship at Luanda, Angola. I read somewhere that in 2006 she capsized at port. Our member Apostolos has seen her at Luanda at has posted a photo here (http://apostolossphotos.fotopic.net/p38520213.html).
Here is a photo of Estoniya, I took around 1988 with Calypso/Cephalonian Sky seen behind her.

I don't know Andy, last report in the web was back in August 2006 that GREEN COAST capsized. Check at the bottom of the page here (http://www.ports.co.za/news/article_2006_11_13_2540.html)for a picture of her wreck and some information on how she was lost. It is stated that "Luanda authorities have since issued a tender for the righting and removal of the wreck".
Two of the sisters (Mariya Ulyanova and Feliks Dzerzhinskyi) were sold to China to become cruise ships (named Excelsior Mercury and Excelsior Neptune) but they were scrapped instead.

I look forward for more of your comments regarding this magnificent ships series, and again this was my simple tribute to a series of ships that I must confess...i am totally addicted ! :) :) :)
The post-1960 ships were a little bigger in displacement than the previous ones (5230 vs. 4871/5035 grt). Out of them some still survive:
NIKOLAYEVSK was last reported in 2004 as laid up,
BAYKAL was also laid up at Vladivostok as in 2004,
while for KHABAROVSK there is controversy. Some sources state that she was also laid up at Vladivostok in 2004 while others mention that she was scrapped back in 1992.
Ι remember having seen ADZHARIA several times at Piraeus in the 80s.
She did'nt got a second life like BASHKIRIYA and was scrapped in 1996.
Here is a photo of her, moored next to the customs.

;) Good friend Ellinis and All
As you know I love these ships series, and after seeing your great photo of the ADZHARIA I could not resist to imagine one of these beauties with Chandris colours...
So, applying to your sense of humor, I used your photo to imagine and create one of these ships, how she would eventually be with Chandris colours and the result was this:
44143
If you consider ofensive, please let me know, because I will erase it immidiatly.
Concerning the name IBERICA, well, I believe this is a good name that could be used in a ship that would connect or cruise from Portugal bound to Greece...
And I love these colours, these ships would have been perfect for Chandris cruises for sure....or Epirotiki....
I look for your comments :D
Brgds
Dimas
Such a nice idea, Dimas! I really like the way that she would look like in Chandris colours.
As for the name, Chandris was using untill the 80s names denoting the female national of a country, ie Britanis for British lady, Italis for Italian, etc
So the Chandris selection for a ship operating from Portugal could be Portogallis (portuguesse lady). However it does'nt sound that good, Iberica sounds better...

Εκτελούσε τακτικά δρομολόγια από την Ελλάδα;

Thank you for this Dimas!
It turns out that we have an ad of LITVA in Greek from July 19, 1963 advertising a trip from Piraeus to Napoli, Genova and Marseilles! On this occasion, the ship is promoted as "of supreme luxury"

Hello Nicholas,
Sad, but it's true, it's Green Coast portrayed, the former Litva wreck you can see capsized somewhere in Luanda bay front.
Her history again:
Litva (1960) / Nr. 110 / 5035 grt
Delivered 1960 to Baltic Shipping Company, Mediterranean and Black Sea cruises. Refurbished in 1973. Used for cruises on the British and German markets until the end of the 80ies. Renamed Boguchar in 1990 and serving between Odessa and Istanbul. It was planned to rebuild the ship and rename her Odessa Dream (for Odessa Sun Ltd.) but plans were withdrawn. Renamed into Fu Jian in 1993 to cruise in the Far East. aquired by Green Coast Shipping Company from China in 2000 and renamed GREEN COAST (registry: Panama). She capsized and sank abt November 2006.
Her Angola adventure was somehow funny, she was acquired by a chinese Luanda business man, named Liu, apparently the biggest Chinese shops owner there, that had plans to convert her into a floating hotel and casino...( the fate of all ships that go to asian interests...)
However this never happened, and she was sadly on the news abt 2002 because her Chinese crew was on terrible conditions, no payments, almost starving, so they abandoned ship.
A friend told me that soon after ship was abandoned, she beceme a spot for all illegal transactions, and later became a shelter of a large number of african refugees / poor people, until she sunk in November 2006...
I hope the above information can help you...
I have some photos saved in my computer ( not postcards :( ) from an unknown photographer which I received some time ago via a South African friend, portraying the Green Coast in a better shape:

Sad end for a lovely ship.

Nicholas thanks for these pics of two classic Russian beauties. The Armenia was from the Mikhail Kalinin/Estonia class of which 19 were originally built.
The Moldavia however was a different class of ship which were older and used for coastal service rather than cruising even though some of these were later chartered. Sister ship to Uzbekistan and Tadzhikistan (see thread on Olympic Flame and Odessa Sun).
Thanks for sharing
Henry.

To "δικό σου" ήταν το LITVA.

ESTONIA WAS VERY POPULAR WITH TRANSOCEAN TOURS FOR THE GERMAN SPEAKING MARKET.
IN ADDITION TO THE CLASSIC CRUISE AREAS SUCH AS NORTHERN SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRY,
BALTIC SEA, WESTERN EUROPE & ATLANTIC ISLANDS, THE ESTONIA ALSO SAILED SOMETIMES
IN THE CARIBBEAN AREA OR IN THE INDIAN OCEAN IN THE WINTER SEASONS.
