Nisyros was a very famous yacht with a short stay in the Greek seas as a converted passenger ship in the late 1940s. She is mentioned by A. Tzamtzis in his I Elliniki Epivatigos Nautilia (Miletos, 2002) as a ship that was doing domestic routes on January 1, 1949. Ellinis has told me that he has at least one of her schedules and will add it after my introduction.

Nisyros was built in the USA as the yacht Caroline belonging to Edward Ford of Toledo, Ohio. She was built at Jacob's in City Island in 1914. She had 339 tons with a length of 50.6 m and a width of 7.3 m. Her service speed was recorded as 14 knots.

Here are the Miramar entries

Here is a wonderful article about the launching of Caroline... It is from the New York Times of April 8, 1914

She stayed with Edward Ford for 3 years and, miraculously, she avoided requisition by the US navy...

But the next stage of her career brought her into new heights. I have reconstructed her story using various sources including http://www.gphistorical.org/autobarons/dodge/dodge2.htm

In late 1917 Horace Dodge purchased the steam yacht Caroline, which for three years had been used in the Great Lakes. In 1918 he registered her out of Detroit.

Then, in 1919 he renamed the yacht Delphine (I) in honor of his daughter. For the marriage of his daughter Delphine to Jim Cromwell on June 17, 1920 he gave them the Delphine for a cruise of the Great Lakes. On that same day as Delphine’s wedding, the keel and frames for a new yacht were laid at the Great Lakes Engineering Works at River Rouge, Michigan. With the completion of the new Delphine II in 1921 the Delphine I was sold in May 1922 to Mrs. Joseph B. Schlotman of Grosse Pointe Shores.

Here is a nice photograph of Delphine in 1920.

With the completion of the new Delphine II in 1921 the Delphine I was sold in May 1922 to Mrs. Joseph B. Schlotman of Grosse Pointe Shores.

Mrs. Joseph B. Schlotman renamed the yacht the Stellaris, and used her until the mid-1930’s. At that time a wooden structure was built around the upper deck, which in my opinion made her slightly less appealing! She sat in the Belle River at Marine City, Michigan.

Here are four photographs of Stellaris with the new superstructure in 1927 or 1928.

Four more photos of the interior of Stellaris in the late 1920s... I have no way to know if that's what passengers of Nisyros would encounter during her voyages in the late 1940s but I doubt it....

The yacht Stellaris was eventually sold in 1941 to the New York Waterway Yacht Cruise Company for tours of New York Harbor and was given the name Sylph II. But with the coming World War II such luxuries did not last long...

Sylph II was acquired by the Navy on March 23, 1942 and commissioned at New York on June 5, 1942. She was named Lash or PYc--31.

The site http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/patrol/pyc31.htm indicates Lash or PYc--31 was assigned to the 3d Naval District, and patrolled the coast off New York until October 16, 1942 when she sailed for the Gulf of Mexico.

Arriving in Algiers, Lousiana on November 5, 1942, the patrol ship Lash operated in the 8th Naval District for almost two years as a training craft for the Armed Guard Training Center in Gulfport, Mississippi. Good bye great wood interior!

Lash was decommissioned at Gulfport on September 6, 1944 and was returned to the New York Waterway Yacht Cruise Company on May 18, 1945. See also http://www.historycentral.com/Navy/patrol/lash.html

At this point I lose the connection... I know she was sold in 1946 to a certain Mediterranean Navigation Co of Alexandria, Egypt and named Nisyros. Nothing else, except that it took another 40 years before she was removed from Lloyd's

Eπίσης στο εξαιρετικό Historical Collection of the Great Lakes (http://ul.bgsu.edu/cgi-bin/xvsl2.cgi), δείνει την ιστορία του (χωρίς το τέλος αφού αναφέρει "Returned to owner, May 18, 1945, and presumed scrapped" και μια φωτογραφία.

Thanks for this exceptional information. What surprises me though is how a 330-ton yacht could be going all the way south to Cyprus, Lebanon and Egypt.... with passengers, etc.... Also it is interesting that the ad connects her to E. Ford who was her owner only from 1914-18. In fact, H. Dodge was a much more famous millionaire...
Thanks for all this. It completes a very nice story!

Idid a comparison between the unknown bow that we had here, and the one of NISYROS.

And I believe she is one and the same ship.

Nisyros remained in the Greek seas only for a little while. Here you see some ads from 1947. First, one from June 18, 1947, very similar to the one from July 1947 that ellinis uploaded

Our well known Pace belonged to the same company(Ignazio Messina http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showpost.php?p=300287&postcount=364

Hello again!

First I added translations to some of the recent entries so that you can better understand them.

Also thank you for the wonderful ad of Welte-Mignon and its use in Stellaris! I happen to be also collector of extremely old records (first issue 78s from 1895-1915 as a well as cylinders) and music systems, so Welte-Mignon is very well known to me

With your permission, I have transformed everything into jpg files, so that more people can see them
