Back in 1953, while working for British Rail, she lost her entire bow in a collision with a Victory-type freighter.
Check the damage at those photos: 1 (http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=124321) 2 (http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/124322) 3 (http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1282) !

Looking at the Fantasia pictures the lines of the ship bring to mind another Harland & Wolf built ship also owned by Chandris, the Amerikanis. The first was designed as a cross-channel ferry while the latter as an African trader for Union Castle Line, but nevertheless, Fantasia looks like a smaller and older version of Amerikanis.

QAM to complement the above photo of this sleek cruise ship and ex British ferry here are some photos and pictures taken from the 1968 and 1971 brochures.

The first photo at Venice is from Photoships (UK copywrite) and the stern forward view which is an interesting angle is taken from a Global and Chandris brochure.

A unique feature of this ship was that for her size she had two swimming pools! all be it small as they were the forward and aft cargo holds when she was a ferry.
Although she was long and narrow and not all her cabins had private facilities she was a very popular and successful ship for Chandris Cruises.

The "Dolce Vita Night Club" must have been rather clistophobic, being at the bottom of what once was the forward hold!

thanks Henry, those brochures give us a good idea of what was life onboard those pioneer greek cruise ships.

Although this page taken from a Chandris 1972 brochure has the Fiesta's funnel close up as a background it also shows how well the Fantasia's forward pool was converted from a former front cargo hold. Chandris had an incredible capacity to convert a ferry into a streamlined handsome looking miniliner as can be seen from the small photo. Note also the detail of the wooden bridge wing.....really superb.

Nicholas, this lovely postcard is the same one I uploaded on the thread 'History of Piraeus port' where I asked if anyone could identify the two ships on the extreme left and right of the picture. I have my suspicions it could be Kalymnos on the left and what looks like the Lemnos on the right, but am sure one of you will venture a more accurate answer.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful postcard which I actually obtained on ebay very recently!

Nicholas and Henry, I don't think that the ship on the right is the Lemnos of Typaldos for the following reasons: a) there were no life boats near the stern of Lemnos, b) Lemnos did not have kingposts on the rear deck, c) the funnel of the ship is white and not the Typaldos buff-yellowish, d) Lemnos had an folding embarkation ramp on both sides near the stern which is missing in the picture above, e) the stern of the pictured vessel has a different shape from the outward bulging stern of Lemnos, g) the last opening of the open embarkation promenade was shorter than the rest on Lemnos, while the pictured ship shows all openings of equal length, h) the unknown vessel has porthole windows in pairs, while Lemnos does not.
As for the Kalymnos as I point out in the "History of Piraeus port" thread, my personal opinion is that it is a match.

Here is a picture of Lemnos taken from the corresponding thread for the "spot the differences" game:

Looking again at the vessel behind Fantasia I spot a big difference on the bridge area compared to Kalymnos. Kalymnos had a wood covered bridge fascia with closed wings while the pictured vessel here has open bridge wings and no wood on the fascia:

Dear friends, I think I solved the mystery of the ship on the right. It must be the second Opatija (1959) of Jadrolinija or her sister Orebic. I apologize for the size of the picture but that is all I could find. Opatija, along with her sistership Orebic were connecting Trieste with Piraeus via Bari and Brindisi.

QAM Well done, you are right on both counts with your usual excellent attention to detail (which I love). To be honest both my suggestions were very wild guesses and while the Kalymnos was a possible look alike the Lemnos was totally out (even in terms of timescale I think as she was a slightly earlier period!) Anyway at least it got everyone going and am glad it has prompted even new interest!

Welcome to our Croatian friend and look forward to your contributions to this very interesting and fast becoming very international forum.

IF you are who I think you are (N. Jercovic) I have seen many of your photos in the Dubrovnik cruise ships forum and they are great. This particular pair of Yugoslav combination liners (Opatija and Orebic) were very handsome combination ships. I think one of them was sold for cruising in the South Pacific area of Tahiti and later ended up somewhere near Los Angeles. Am not sure of the fate of the other?

All the best and look forward to your threads

4.000 τόνων με το όνομα Duke of York.
