Damaskini is an obscure Greek passenger/cargo ship that worked the Greek seas only between 1895 and 1900. She belonged to Theodore Sinodinos. He and his brother had just two ships as shown below

Tzamtzis give a drawing for this long-forgotten ship Damaskini (note that in Greek Tzamtzis spell this one as Δαμασκινή while other sources spell her as Δαμασκηνή). As for the Pringips Georgios, it should not be confused with the Foustanos (Aktoploia Ermoupoleos) ship by the same name.

Surprisingly enough, we have a lot of information about this ship! She was built for Hatton and Cookson in 1885 as a mixed passenger/cargo ship in Barrow Shipyards under the name Itumba. She had 279 tons, a length of 39.9 m a width 0f 7.8 m

She stayed in Greece as Damaskini from 1895 to 1900 and was subsequently sold to the French Deves & Chaumet who named her Hirondelle.

Of Damaskini I have only one mention in Skokos Diary that she was serving the Amvrakikos Gulf to Patras in the summer 1898, nothing else!

Thank for this. I had seen it but I thought it was just a copy of the Miramar and did not notice the text below... So Hirondelle moved to Senegal... Incredible...



Deves, Chaumet & Compagnie étaient l'une des sociétés françaises de commerce les plus puissantes du Sénégal en 1921.
Ils possédaient des chalands à vapeur qui remontaient le Sénégal.
La filiale de Deves et Chaumet était les Messageries Africaines (avec notamment le Mossi, après guerre).

From a Vlastos auction item (see below) we conclude that Damaskini must have been running the route from Piraeus to Kefallinia as there is a stamped mail object from Lixouri

Λοιπον, το πρωτο και τριτο ειναι το Hirondelle (Δαμασκηνη) που ζητουσαμε, κατασκευης 1885. Το μεσαιο ειναι ενα αλλο Hirondelle που φτιαχθηκε μια χρονια αργοτερα και δεν ειναι το δικο μας

Δυστυχως ορισμενα στοιχεια για το πλοιο Δαμασκηνη χαθηκαν περυσι κατα την διαρκεια των ηλεκτονικων μας προβληματων.

Εδω εχουμε μια καταχωρηση απο την εταιρια που εκμεταλλευοταν το Δαμασκηνη, την Ελληνικη Ατμοπλοια Αδελφων Συνοδινου. Ειναι δημοσιευμενη στην περιφημη Αθηναικη εφημεριδα Αστυ της 22ας Ιανουαριου 1898 και μας παρουσιαζει δρομολογια του πλοιου. Ενα απο αυτα για τον Αργοσαρωνικο οπου το πλοιο εκανε σχεδον 15 ωρες απο το Ναυπλιο στον Πειραια (με ενδιαμεσες σκαλες). Ενα αλλο ειναι για τον Κορινθιακο και μεχρι την Ζακυνθο και Αργοστολι...

Πραγματι, πολυ ενδιαφερον θεμα...
