Eugenia was a small yacht that had a short life in the Greek seas as a passenger ship of the Androhydraiki Atmoploia of Georgios Koulouras.

Eugenia was a steel-hulled, single-screw yacht built by Hawthorn & Co. at Leith in Scotland in 1897 for J. G. Cassatt. She had 165 tons, a length of 39.1 m, a width of 6 m and a speed of 13 knots. Indeed, Eugenia was purchased by the U.S. Navy in June 9, 1898 and renamed Siren. She was commissioned on June 24, 1898 and served on the North Atlantic from July 26, 1898 until the end of the Spanish-American War on August 12, 1898. At some point during this time, she was reconstructed to 343 tons. During this time, she participated in the blockade of Spanish Cuba as a part of the North Atlantic Squadron.

Siren was decommissioned on September 24, 1898 and remained idle until June 22, 1899 when she was loaned to the Virginia Militia. Subsequently, Siren served at the Navy Yard at Norfolk, Va., as a tender to the receiving ship, Franklin.

She struck from the Navy list on August 30, 1910 and was offered for sale.

Eugenia was purchased in 1913 or 1914 by a small Greek shipping company whose name was unknown to me before this article. The company was called Androhydraiki Atmoploia and belonged to Georgios Koulouras. I know little about them except that they were the owners of Eugenia and Karystos!

Here is an ad from July 20, 1916 announcing two routes, one to Laconia, the other to Korthion (I presume from Piraeus). As a second ad from July 15, 1916 indicates that Karystos was going to Andros, one can safely assume that Eugenia was in the Laconia trade!

Regrettably we do not know what happened to Eugenia, except that (according to A. Tzamtzis) by 1921 neither the shipping company nor the ship existed any more.

Siren served on the North Atlantic station from 25 July 1898 until the end of the Spanish-American War on 12 August 1898. During this time, she participated in the blockade of Spanish Cuba as a part of the North Atlantic Squadron. On 2 August, she captured the Norwegian ship, Franklin, with a cargo of provisions headed for the Spanish. Five days later, she assisted Viking in the capture of another Norwegian ship, the steamer Berzen, off Cape St. Frances.

Siren was decommissioned on 24 September 1898; and, on 22 June 1899, she was loaned to the Virginia Naval Militia. Subsequently, Siren served at the Navy Yard at Norfolk, Va., as tender to the receiving ship, Franklin, until struck from the Navy list on 30 August 1910.

Αφού ξεκαθαρίσαμε ποιό ήταν το ΕΙΡΗΝΗ του Γ.Κουλουρά ας δούμε και κάποια στοιχεία για το άλλο πλοίο της “Ανδοϋδραϊκής Ατμοπλοϊας”, το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ.

Το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ δεν ήταν μια θαλαμηγός, αλλά ένα μικρό φορτηγοποσταλάκι μόλις 100 τόνων και μήκους 33 μέτρων.
Είχε ναυπηγηθεί στην Αγγλία -γύρω στο 1880- και σύντομα ήρθε στην Ελλάδα για να πάρει το όνομα ΣΑΜΟΣ και να έχει ως έδρα του τη Σμύρνη.
Το 1914 το πλοίο πουλήθηκε στον επίσης Σμυρνιό Π.Παντολέων για να αντικαταστήσει το αδελφό σκάφος του που επίσης λεγόταν ΣΑΜΟΣ και που είχε αιχμαλωτιστεί εκείνη τη χρονιά στην Τουρκία.
Το 1916 το πλοίο θα πουληθεί δυο φορές παιρνώντας τελικά στα χέρια του πλοιάρχου Γιώργου Κουλουρά που θα το μετονομάσει ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ.
Το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ όμως δεν ταξίδεψε πολύ μιας και ένα χρόνο αργότερα, τον Ιούλη του 1917, βυθίστηκε στο στενό της Μακρονήσου όταν το εμβόλισε το ατμόπλοιο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ.

Στις 30 Ιουλίου 1917 εμφανίστηκε η παρακάτω ανακοίνωση για αναχώρηση του ατμόπλοιου ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ από τον Πειραιά προς τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Αποτελούσε το πρώτο ταξίδι του πλοίου στα πλαίσια μια τριμηνιαίας ναύλωσης του για να μεταφέρει φρούτα στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Πραγματικά στις 31 Ιουλίου, το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ αναχώρησε έμφορτο με ροδάκινα και αχλάδια. Είχε ήδη πέσει το σκοτάδι όταν το πλοίο διέσχιζε το στενό Λαυρίου - Μακρονήσου. Στην ίδια περιοχή αλλά με αντίθετη κατεύθυνση έπλεε και το ατμόπλοιο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Λόγω της εμπόλεμης κατάστασης (η Ελλάδα εισήλθε στον Α' Παγκόσμιο στις 15 Ιουνίου) τα πλοία τότε έπλεαν με σβηστούς τους φανούς ναυσιπλοϊας τους. Αποτέλεσμα του βαθιού σκοταδιού και της έλλειψης βοηθημάτων ναυσιπλοΐας ήταν το ΑΓΙΟΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ να εμβολίσει το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ και να προκληθεί εισροή υδάτων. Όπως διαβάζουμε και στο παρακάτω άρθρο, σε δέκα λεπτά το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ βυθίστηκε αφού είχε εγκαταλειφθεί από το πλήρωμα του με ασφάλεια.

Το ναυάγιο του ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ έμεινε ανενόχλητο στο βυθό για εκατό σχεδόν χρόνια. Πέρσι εντοπίστηκε από καταδυτική ομάδα ένα ναυάγιο που εκτιμούμαι οτι πρόκειται για το ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ και ήδη αποτελεί αντικείμενο μελέτης προκειμένου να ταυτοποιηθεί.
