Built in 1929 as Campana for French S.G.T.M. in 1943 wa renamed RIO JACHAL and in 1955 sold to SIOSA (Sicula Oceanica) of F.LLI GRIMALDI Naples, at the beginning with two funnels and then after furtHer transformation in cruise ship with only one,the IRPINIA was the ship that was part of the history of Italian Shippinh
IRPINIA was indeed a truly historic vessel. Her full story with several photos can be found here (http://www.maquettes-marmar.net/fichemaq/campana/campana.html).
Another brochure of IRPINIA is also available here (http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=23560).

Here is some more information of Irpinia from Bill Miller's book Modern Cruise Ships 1965-1990, Dover, 1992. On page 54 it presents a very white and very long Irpinia at a cruise in Geirangerfjord, Norway. She was originally the French Campana and had been built at Newcastle-upon-Tyne by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson in 1929. She had 13,204 tons and a speed of 16 knots. Among others, she was with Siosa Lines doing cruises. She was scrapped in 1983, age 54 (!) but not before she "starred" as the infamous St Louis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_St._Louis) in the Voyage of the Damned in 1976 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075406/ By that time she was with Sicula Oceana

Let's see some shots of a film of Stuart Rosenberg with the title "Voyage of the Damned" (1976).
Ellinis informed me that that the ship of the film is "Iprinia".
In the film the name of the ship is "St Louis".
In the film played Lee Grant, Faye Danaway, Oscar Werner, Sam Wanamaker, Lynne Frederick.
Many thanks to Ellinis for all his help.
Special dedicated to all of you.
There are many many beautiful shots with the ship.
Among them ..

the second funnel is a "dummy" (fake)
i saw the movie for two month on DVD
some scene i think are made on the ship, deck ( clear) dinnerroom, maschine, captainsrooms!
some cabins............i dont now.i have pictures from the line and the cabins was style in the 50s/60s
and the biggest point is: the original ST.LOUIS have a black hull, not white!
the actors: have big name .........but his work was bad!

Here are two contrasting views of her. The first a postcard against the background of a retouched New York with her original stacks and the second a stunning view of her at sea from a German brochure. She was a very beautiful liner!

Beautiful photo thanks Neven!
Henry.
Α great ships she was. She managed to serve for over 50 years in all short of services.
SIOSA had some most colourful ships at that time. My favorites were the old CARIBIA and the VENEZUELA, both having long and succesful careers.
Following is another photo of IRPINIA, and another with a bow view can be seen here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/biblionauticaull/5208814306/).
