Here is a small passenger ship with a significant history in the Greek seas, gulfs and bays over a period of more than 30 years, after an initial glorious period in the British isles for another 30 years, when she was forcefully retired, she was 63 years old!

Poros, Georgios or Eurotas (depending on how you encounter her in your Greek histories) was built as the yacht Mona in 1871 (not in 1875 as mentioned by Tzamtzis in his 2002 book) by the Day, Summers & Co of Southampton, UK. The Day Summers company specialized in smaller ships, tugs, trawlers and yachts. Several old Greek ships of small tonnage had been built there including Kleoniki/Aetos.

Mona was built as an 193 tons vessel (later, during her Greek days, increased to 274 tons) with a length of 46.1 m and a width of 6.4 m. She was registered in Southampton in 1871 and in Greenock in 1883.

Her owners were Earl House 1871-80; James Clark of Ralston, Paisley 1880-1901; and James McCall of Greenock, 1901-3. She was a classic pleasure yacht, not participating in races and regattas, as far as I know.

In 1903 or 1904 she was bought by the small shipping company Ioannis Ch. Papadopoulos Line that proceeded to remodel her (she was already 33 years old) and increase its tonnage to 274 tons. The changes were made at Neorion, Syros under the successors of the John McDowall Co.

In 1907 she was named Poros and started voyages in the Argosaronikos, Argolikos and Corinthian bay routes....

Small Greek passenger ships were suffering due to the tremendous competition of those days... Poros was not the exception. It is probably in 1916 tha the ship was bought by an obscure coastal shipping company not mentioned in the Greek Maritime Archives before: Atmoploia Ellinikis Aigialitidos or Hellenic Coastal Shipping of Themistocles Apostolou.

She was placed on the Chalkis to Thessaloniki route, when other bigger ships were busy with the War. In fact she was a direct competitor of Kafireus in this route.

She must have stayed in the area because on November 28, 1919 we find her doing the route to Skiathos and Skopelos!

In 1920, Poros was sold to the well known Elias Hatziconstantis & Co line and renamed Georgios. She was listed at 273 tons at that time. Other Hatziconstantis & Co ships of that period were Aeon, Athena, Danae, Esperos, Konstantinos and Patris.

It must be noted that this Georgios is a different vessel than the one bought be P Damoulakis in 1934 and then by D Tsidas in 1935

In 1928, Georgios was renamed Eurotas and started doing the Piraeus, Monemvasia, Neapolis, Kythera, Gytheion route. She still belonged to the Hatziconstantis & Co.

The end of Eurotas arrived in the early 1930s. In 1931 she was sold to a small and obscure company, the Vavanakou Line, registered in the name of Kassiani Vavanakou.

In 1932, Eurotas along with other vessels was found to be above the limit of good shipping ans was retired, going for scrap in 1934.

Οι κρουαζιερες Οδυσσεια εδιναν την ευκαιρια σε νεους και νεες απο τις ΗΠΑ (ιδιως απο την ανατολικη ακτη) να περασουν μερικες εβδομαδες στην Ιταλια, Δαλματικες ακτες, Αλβανια, Ελλαδα και Τουρκια επισκεπτομενοι περισσοτερο τα αρχαια και αξιοθεατα της εποχης εκεινης

Απο την μπροσουρα το καλοκαιριου 1927 παρουσιαζω εδω ωρισμενες φωτογραφιες του 1926 του πλοιου Γεωργιος του Χατζηκωνσταντη. Νομιζω οτι ειναι η πρωτη φορα που βλεπουμε φωτογραφιες του επιβατηγου οπως ηταν στις Ελληνικες θαλασσες με τα χρωματα του Χατζηκωνσταντη...

The Odyssey cruises, about which I plan to prepare a separate article and subject in the near future, were educational cruises of 1926-1930 that gave the opportunity to young men and women from the USA (mostly from the east coast) to spend a few weeks in Italy, Dalmatian coast, Albania, Greece and Turkey, visiting the ancient sites of that time…

From the brochure of the summer of 1927 I present here some photos (from 1926) of the passenger ship Georgios of the Hatziconstantis shipping company. I believe this is the first time we see photographs of this classic ship as she was in the Greek seas with the colors of Hatzikonstantis.

The various pictures and brochures were given to me by Dr. Pamela Duff who sent them to me with permission to reproduce them here in nautilia.gr. I thank Dr Duff for her kind gesture.

Για να απαντησω στην ερωτηση του φιλου Αρη, κια για να καλυψω την περιεργια αλλων φιλων, παρουσιαζω εδω το κειμενο της μπροσουρας του ODYSSEY 1927. Ηταν η μικροτερη. Το 1930 η μπροσουρα ειχε φτασει τις 64 σελιδες (και περιελαμβανε αεροπορικη Οδυσσεια στην Μεσογειο!!!)

To ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ είχε αναμιχθεί στα γεγονότα που εκτυλήχτηκαν κατά την ελληνο-ιταλική κρίση τον Αύγουστο - Σεπτέμβριο του 1923. Όπως διαβάζουμε, ένα ιταλικό υποβρύχιο το σταμάτησε με πυρά και το υποχρέωσε να αποβιβάσει τους επιβάτες του στην Ηγουμενίτσα και να επιστρέψει στον Πειραιά.

Σχετικά με την ιστορία του πλοίου μετά το 1920, αξίζει να αναφέρουμε οτι αγοράστηκε από τους αδελφούς Χατζηκωνσταντή στο τέλος του 1919 και από την Κ.Βαβουνάκου το Μάρτιο του 1928. Λίγο αργότερα το βρίσκουμε να ταξιδεύει για την Ατμοπλοΐα Γ. Γεωργίου, πιθανώς ναυλωμένο αφού δεν είχε αλλάξει ιδιοκτησία.

Σε αυτή την ανακοίνωση του 1929 βλέπουμε το πλοίο να κάνει το ίδιο περίπου δρομολόγιο που έχουμε δει εδώ (http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showthread.php?106776-%D4%EF-1%EF-%BE%E4%F1%E1-Hydra&p=524606#post524606)να κάνει παλιότερο το ΥΔΡΑ της ίδιας εταιρίας.

Μια καρτ ποστάλ με ένα ατμόπλοιο να περνάει τα στενά του Ευρίπου. Ανέβηκε στην ομάδα "Φωτογραφίες της Παλιάς Χαλκίδας" στο ΦΒ και κατόπιν αρκετής προσπάθειας με συγκρίσεις κατέληξα πως πρόκειται για το ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ.

Το πλοίο ταξίδεψε τουλάχιστον σε δυο περιόδους στη γραμμή του Ευβοϊκού. Το 1915-16 ως ΠΟΡΟΣ για τη βραχύβια "Ατμ. Ελληνικής Αιγιαλίτιδος Θεμ. Αποστόλου" και ξανά το 1929 ως ΕΥΡΩΤΑΣ για την "Ατμ. Γ. Γεωργίου". Η καρτ ποστάλ φέρετε να είναι της περιόδου 1900-1905 και αν αυτό είναι σωστό τότε το βλέπουμε ως ΠΟΡΟΣ με τα σινιάλα της Ατμοπλοΐας Ιωάννη Παπαδόπουλου. Την ταυτοποίηση βοήθησε η ξεχωριστή πλώρη με την ιδιαίτερη σχεδίαση. Συγκρίνοντας με τη φωτογραφία του (ως ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ) ταιριάζουν και τα υπόλοιπα χαρακτηριστικά του. Παρακάτω και λεπτομέρεια της πλώρης που ανέβηκε στην ομάδα "Φίλοι Ιστορίας Χαλκίδας":

Με την ευκαιρία να πούμε οτι στην παρακάτω φωτογραφία δεν βλέπουμε το ΠΟΡΟΣ/ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ. Το εικονιζόμενο είναι φανερό οτι έχει "πούπι" (poop deck) κάτι που το ΠΟΡΟΣ δεν είχε.
