Now here is a ship that was given to Greece as a required gift (reparations!) by the Germans after World War II. We know Simon von Utrecht came to Greece (she newspaper ad) was modified but obviously was not good for passenger travel (was she smelling fish? - see below) and remained without a buyer!

The announcement below mentions this small boat with a big German name (for those who do not know, Simon von Utrecht was a Hamburg hero), Simon von Utrecht, that obviously found her way in the hands of the Greek Government. The auction is from March 13, 1948

By the way, the ship was a small one, just 256 tons, built in 1914 as a fishing trawler for herring!!! She was built in Hamburg by the H. C. Stülcken und Sohn Company for the Deutsche Heringsfisch GmbH. She had a length of just 41 m but a width of 7.3 m (!) a fat little boat!

Νίκο, έχω την εντύπωση πως το Simon von Utrecht που αναφέρεται στο άρθρο δεν είναι το αλιευτικό του 1914 αλλά το φορτηγό του 1922 (πρώην WILHELM HEMSOTH).
Σε αυτό συνηγορεί και οτι το 1951 το φορτηγό αυτό άλλαξε όνομα σε MARIANNINA για λογαριασμό ελληνικής εταιρείας.

Eπίσης η παραπάνω φωτογραφία παραπέμπει σε πλοίο πιλότων, εξού και η επιγραφή ELBE στο πλάι του.
