The Other Neilos

The other Neilos, as I like to call her (the main one was https://forum.nautilia.gr/showthread.php?63049-%CD%E5%DF%EB%EF%F2-%CA%E5%F6%E1%EB%EF%ED%E9%DC-Douro-Alcira-Camilla-C-Camilla-Cephalonia-Neilos) was built as the Tynesider by Schlesinger, Davis & Co, Newcastle in May 1888. She was a 1,378-ton ship owned by the Tyne Steamship Co of Newcastle, UK. The company was formed in 1864 and operated passenger services mainly between Newcastle and London. They also ran mostly cargo services between Newcastle and Copenhagen, Antwerp, Ghent, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Dunkirk. The Tynesider was used on the Newcastle - London route and carried about 200 passengers. In 1903 the company amalgamated with the Tees Union Shipping Co, Middlesbrough and became the Tyne-Tees Shipping Co.

In 1908, Tynesider was sold to Greece (Ermoupolis Line) and named Neilos. In 1912 she was sold to India and named Faris. She was scrapped at Bombay in 1914.

On another site http://www.wiki-north-east.co.uk/article.aspx?id=1350421 (http://www.wiki-north-east.co.uk/article.aspx?id=1350421we) we found the following:

William Laing who was also involved in the Tyne Steam Shipping Company and founded the Town Moor temperance festival which evolved into the Hoppings. The first chairman of the Tyne Steam Shipping Company was Tyneside shipbuilder and industrialist Charles Mark Palmer, whose statue featured last week. The company employed 400 workers and operated 10 steamers, including its pride and joy the Wallsend-built Tynesider. This 1,330-ton ship carried 75 first-class and 90 second-class passengers and could accomplish the Newcastle-London sailing in less than 24 hours.
An account of the time says: “The bringing of this attractive, interesting trip within a comparatively short space of time and the accomplishment of it under circumstances so generally favourable to the comfort and enjoyment of passengers has proved a veritable trump card in the hands of the company. The company’s wharves in Newcastle are on the Quay, within one mile of the Central Station, cab fare thence being a shilling.”
Much is made of the fact that the Tynesider’s dining saloon is apart from the sleeping berths, that the vessel has electric light throughout, that the saloon on deck boasts an American organ and a piano and there are spacious decks for promenading.
The company’s sister ship to the Tynesider, in the days when sailing was a common-place way to visit London, was the Royal Dane.
She took two hours longer to make the trip “but is none the less a desirable ship”.

Here is a short piece of news from the Skrip of June 23, 1908 which describes in detail the purchase and arrival of this Neilos in Greece!

She was a rather big ship for her age and had a large number of rooms and beds!!!

Sorry that she lasted only four years!

The readers will note that this Neilos belonged to Psiakis, Krinos and Capparis... So, it is the Neilos of Krinos that Ellinis was taking about in http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showpost.php?p=203569&postcount=6

This document gives also the answer as to which was the "second ship bought by this company! It was the Eurotas discussed here
http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showpost.php?p=248190&postcount=5

A few indications of her routes from various articles in the Skrip:

On July 24, 1910, she is coming back from Alexandria

Then on April 14, 1911 she carries Bulgarian students back to Pyrgos (Burgas) of Bulgaria

Here is the sad end of Neilos and the closing of the Capparis-Krinos Line
