Καλλιόπη [Scotia, Finistere, Calliopi]

There is very little I know about Calliopi but I hope my sources are correct. It was a Greek ship that graced the Greek seas for about 14 years.

According to my sources, she was built as steamship Scotia by W. B. Thompson of Dundee, Scotland in 1875. She belonged to the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co. which was formed in 1826 when the Dundee & Perth Union Shipping Co. merged with the Dundee & Perth Shipping Co. to provide passenger services between London, Glasgow (via the Forth & Clyde Canal) and Liverpool. voyages were also made to the Baltic and White Seas for flax and timber. In 1834 the company started using steamships on the Dundee to London service, in 1857 the fleet of the Dundee and Hull Shipping Co. was taken over and in 1859 ships were first used in the fruit trade from Greece and Spain.

In 1880 she was sold to France renamed Finistère. As such she belonged to the Societé de Navigation Cotière pour l' Afriqe du Nord and covered the routes of North Africa (from Aliers to Oran and Tunis) from 1880 to 1918. She had 243 tons originally and was expanded to 453 tons. She had a length of 54.7 m and a width of 7.3 m

The ship seems to have arrived in Greece around 1918, not 1924 as mentioned elsewhere.

Tzamtzis indicates that in 1921 the ship belonged to the Coastal Shipping Company of the Mediterranean and Black Sea (Atmolpoia Mesogeiou-Euxeinou).

Indeed, on May 18, 1919 we find her doing the route of Argosaronikos all the way south to Astros and Leonidion.

As indicated in a schedule of July 17, 1919, this company seemed to belong to one of the Inglessis (ot Igglessis) Brothers

Meanwhile, notice this magic ship that went from 12 knots to 14 knots in just two months!

Calliopi continued to serve the Greek seas throughout the 1920s, in the latter part as a ship of the Samos Shipping Co of Inglessis

Νομίζω πως στο θέμα αυτό έχουν μπλεχτεί δύο πλοία. Το ένα είναι το ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗ (ex-Scotia, Finistere) το οποίο αγοράστηκε το 1925 από το Ν. Γαβαλά και ταξίδεψε για αυτόν ως το τέλος του. Και το άλλο είναι το ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗ του Φ.Ιγγλέση το οποίο ταξίδεψε το 1919-21.

Nίκο, το miramar αναφέρει πως διαλύθηκε το 1930 στην Ελλάδα. Ωστόσο και αυτό είναι λάθος, μιας και το καράβι ναυάγησε το 1927.

Δε ξέρω αν βοηθάει αλλά στο παρακάτω φαίνεται ότι το πλοίο ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗ - CALLIOPI (Scotia - Finistere) το 1930 το είχε κάποιος ΓΑΒΑΛΑΣ

Μηπως αυτη η ανακοινωση για πωληση του Καλλιοπη (στις 1 Αυγουστου 1924) αναφερεται για την αγορα του απο τον Γαβαλα;

Νομίζω πως αναφέρεται στην εκποίηση του ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗ του Ιγγλέση. Του ταιριάζουν και οι 281 τόνοι.

To ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗ ξεχωρίζει στη γωνιά του Τζελέπη με το "Γ" της Ατμοπλοΐας Γαβαλά στο φουγάρο του.

Μια πρυμνιά άποψη του ατμόπλοιου στου Τζελέπη όταν ακόμη τα πλοία δεν πρυμνοδετούσαν προκειμένου να βγάζουν μεροκάματο οι λεμβούχοι. Δυο-τρία χρόνια τελικά τους επιτράπηκε αλλά τα λεμβουχικά παρέμειναν στα εισητήρια μέχρι πλην λίγα χρόνια.
