" In March 1994, during winter lay-up at Aegion, she was sunk "by unknown persons acting maliciously", as her owners, Ventouris, held it. The underwriters refused to accept Ventouris's $10 million claim, however, stipulating that Mr. Ventouris has been connected with the loss of five vessels in recent years, two of them under suspicious circumstances. Among these was sister ship Italia Express, which sank in March 1988 at Drapetsona following an explosion caused by limpet mines attached to her hull. Ventouris won both cases against the underwriters, which failed to provide hard evidence that Mr. Ventouris had masterminded the sinkings."
