Το ναυάγιο του Σπερχειός [The loss of Sperchios, ex-Noble Nora]
The tragic loss of Sperheios (Spercheios in all Anglosaxonic references) in 1945 needs to be mentioned here. Sperheios was a special ship. She was a small vessel of the Greek Navy that was assigned from time to time to carry passengers, mostly naval personnel and their families, although she would not be called "a passenger ship". Here she is in 1945, a few months before her loss of May 3, 1945. The picture is from old war newspapers and it is not very good

Believe it or not she started as a Norwegian whaler! As you can see, she was an 160-ton whaler with a length of 32 m only!! She was built in the UK as Noble Nora but spent most of her life in Durban, South Africa, until transfered to Norway in 1941. Then, in September 1943 she was given to the Greek Navy in Alexandria, named Sperheios and helped in various projects serving as a minsweeper. NB: The Greek Navy uses names of Greek rivers for its minsweepers.
