A few years ago, as a pilot at Famagusta, Cyprus [...] One day I went out in the pilot launch to meet a vessel approaching and as I drew close saw that she was flying the
Greek flag and was obviously a former yacht, for her clipper bow and excessively overhanging counter stern could have belonged to no merchant ship built as such. Getting aboard I found that she was the CAPTAIN STRATIS, with Captain T. Georghios in command. Later, in what had probably been the saloon originally he showed me a plaque with the following on it:
S.Y. ADVENTURESS
"This yacht was on continuous Admiralty service from the outbreak of war in 1914 until March 1919, having been employed in the North Sea, the West Coast of Scotland and South Coast of Ireland. She, was armed with two 12-pounder guns and fitted with submarine hydrophones for detecting enemy submarines. The yacht was Presented to the Admiralty for the duration of the war by the owner, Sir William Garthwaite, Bart."The ADVENTURESS had been built by Hepple & Co. at North Shields in 1913 and subsequent to being owned by Sir William had a succession of different owners and names. The full tally of her names up to the time I saw her in January-as: CAPTAIN STRATIS ex ITEA ex ANGLIA ex SCOTIA exBERYL ex ADVENTURESS. It may well be that by now she has added another name or two to the list.
