Her saloon is decorated with oil paintings of some of Ireland's beauty spots, and despite their sixty years' service they still evoke admiration. The Earl of Erne is of 688 tons gross, . and was substantially built by Messrs. R. Napier and Sons. When her career as a cross-Channel passenger vessel was over she entered on her present useful work of cattle carrying. In 1914, when much cross-Channel tonnage was requisitioned by the Government, she did yeoman service, making two or three trips each week from Dundalk to Birkenhead full up with horses, cattle, sheep and pigs. She is somewhat slower than of yore, but Mr. Cocks, the manager of the Dundalk and Newry Swam Packet Company says that the Earl of Erne has been at sea with a valuable cargo of live stock for many nights when the more economically run and faster screw boat has not dared to leave port.
