PRINCESS ALICE
PRINCESS ADELAIDE.
These two ships were designed as Night Boats to run between Vancouver and Victoria,B.C.They were eventually replaced by the Pr. JOAN and the Pr. ELIZABETH, in 1930. Like the Joan and Elizabeth, the Pr.ALICE and Pr. ADELAIDE were almost identical, except for the more enclosed forward deck and broader funnel on the Alice. They were not designed for speed, but for quiet, economical night time operation. They had large dining rooms for about 200 people, and about 95 seat cafe, with 118 staterooms, and approximately1200 day passengers, They both were single screw, driven by a four cylinder triple expansion steam engine. The Pr. Adelaide was the first built, by the Farifield Shipbuilding Company in 1910. Her length 290.5 ft. width 46.1 ft. 3061 gt. She was launched on July 7, 1910, and ran her trials on September 29th. as a coal burner, she made 17.9 knots, but in service she ran at 16 knots. She arrived in Victoria on Dec.14,1910, and entered service on Jan.25,1911.
The Pr. ALICE was built by Swan & Hunter Shipbuilders and launched May 29, 1911
Her length 290.6 ft. width 46.1 ft. 3099 gt. and during her trials on August 19,1911, she made 17.5 knots she also burned coal. She sailed from the Tyne on Sept. 22, 1911, and entered service Jan.17, 1912. (Coal was the only fuel that was in good supply on their sail from the U.K., but both Ships were converted to oil burners after there arrival at Victoria,B.C.). Although they were mainly night boats, they both served on many other runs, Prince Rupert -- Alaska -- Triangle and Gulf Islands.
The Pr. ALICE was the first to be taken out of service in June of 1947 and the Pr,ADELAIDE followed in Oct. of 1948. Both ships were purchased by the Typaldos Brothers Steamship Co. of Greece. Pr. ADEDLAIDE was renamed "ANGELICA" and left Victoria Sept. 17, 1949. The Pr. Alice was renamed "AEGAEON" left Victoria on Nov. 19, 1949. After 38 years of service in British Columbia waters. After many more years of service in the Mediterranean, they were boyh scrapped in Italy, the ALICE in 1967, and the ADELAIDE in 1968.
