Back in 1953, while working for British Rail, she lost her entire bow in a collision with a Victory-type freighter.

Looking at the Fantasia pictures the lines of the ship bring to mind another Harland & Wolf built ship also owned by Chandris, the Amerikanis. The first was designed as a cross-channel ferry while the latter as an African trader for Union Castle Line, but nevertheless, Fantasia looks like a smaller and older version of Amerikanis.

QAM to complement the above photo of this sleek cruise ship and ex British ferry here are some photos and pictures taken from the 1968 and 1971 brochures.

The first photo at Venice is from Photoships (UK copywrite) and the stern forward view which is an interesting angle is taken from a Global and Chandris brochure.

A unique feature of this ship was that for her size she had two swimming pools! all be it small as they were the forward and aft cargo holds when she was a ferry.
Although she was long and narrow and not all her cabins had private facilities she was a very popular and successful ship for Chandris Cruises.

The "Dolce Vita Night Club" must have been rather clistophobic, being at the bottom of what once was the forward hold!

thanks Henry, those brochures give us a good idea of what was life onboard those pioneer greek cruise ships.

Although this page taken from a Chandris 1972 brochure has the Fiesta's funnel close up as a background it also shows how well the Fantasia's forward pool was converted from a former front cargo hold. Chandris had an incredible capacity to convert a ferry into a streamlined handsome looking miniliner as can be seen from the small photo. Note also the detail of the wooden bridge wing.....really superb.

Thanks Henry, those were really handsome ships, classic and of human scale, and I believe that the Chandris logo was one of the most striking logos ever.
