Expanding Estonian ferry owner Tallink has tied up a deal
The operator will pay the Greek company’s parent Attica Holdings EUR 310m ($375m) for the 30,300–gt Superfast IX (built 2002), Superfast VII and Superfast VIII (both built 2001).
If regulatory hurdles are cleared, the deal will go through in April.
The ships will start running between Estonia and Finland and Estonia and Germany, taking less than a day to make the journeys. They are currently serving the Finland to Germany route. Tallink said: "The Estonia-Finland route allows us to meet the growing cargo demand".
"The Germany route creates for Tallink new opportunities for growth development and an opportunity to enter the central European market."
The move was revealed on Monday by Superfast itself, which said Tallink had made an approach for the 700-passenger ships.
Tallink boss Enn Pant added: “Both the launching of the Riga-Stockholm route in April, and today’s acquisition allowing us to launch a route to Germany, is part of Tallink's ongoing aggressive strategy whereby we create new travelling opportunities to new destinations and at the same time ensure the company’s strong future development perspective."
Superfast also runs ships between Scotland and Belgium and in Mediterranean markets.
Tallink has also been linked to a move for Sea Containers’ Finnish ferry operation Silja Line.
