I apologize to the readers of this Forum for some mistakes and confusion of this Poseidon with another small vessel that ended up becoming one of the heroic sips of Jewish immigration to the promised land in the late 1930s... I have now gone through all the articles I wrote here and I have corrected spurious passages with correct information (shown now in red)

Sea King/Poseidon or Possidon/Papadiamandis/Alexandros Papadiamandis

Little is known about the beginnings of the small Greek passenger ship (without quarters) Poseidon/ Papadiamandisthat did small and unusual routes in the 1910s and 1920s ...

Poseidon was built as tah yacht Sea King at the Robert Duncan & Company shipyards of Port Glasgow, Scotland in 1877 (from the Lloyd Register).

Our Poseidon had anywhere between 60 and 110 tons according to various sources. She conducted the following local routes:
--- Aedipsos, Trikeri, Skiathos , Skopelos (around 1898 )
--- Aegina, Aggistri, Epidauros (around 1900 and then 1906-08 ). During the second period she belonged to the Elliniki Atmoploia of Mihail Gikas & Co.
--- Loutraki, Antikyra, Itea, Galaxidi (1903-05)
--- Piraeus, Eleusis, Pahi Megaron, "Salamis" (1908-12 and 1917-28 ).
NB: We do not know what was meant by "Salamis". Probably Faneromeni Salaminos). Again during the second period she may have belonged to the Elliniki Atmoploia of Mihail Gikas & Co.
--- We have not been able to identify other routes.

In his recent book Diadromi enos aiona (J&J Hellas, Piraeus, 2007), K. Filippou offers the following memoir of his father's early days, and a trip to Eleusis and Salamis on Poseidon on May 15, 1910...

My father, Nasos, was born in Eleusis in 1903. When I was growing up I remember him mentioning the small boat they used to take from Eleusis to go to Piraeus... He would go on to say that Iera Odos was not in good shape and a ride to Athens (Plateia Koumoundourou) would take 3 hours... And when we were visiting his father's house in Eleusis in the 1950s he would take me to the small port of Eleusis to show me from where they were taking off...

Father recalled two small boats, Demetra and Poseidon, doing a regular passenger route to Piraeus, and a third boat, Aias, going to Batsi, Salaminas and some times to Faneromeni.

Going through my old photos I found this personal photograph of my father from 1925. It shows him (fourth from left with hat on) and his friends going from Eleusis to Piraeus (for an evening of fun) and the back (in his own handwriting) tells us the truth...

This ship cannot be confused with the Poseidon that became a ship carrying Jewish people to Palestine! Poseidon was one of the smallest ships doing some type of passenger service. According to the documents below, she had just 60 tons. For those not aware of Paul Silverstone's list of Aliyah Bet ships, here it is http://paulsilverstone.com/immigrati.../shiplist1.php

Paul Silverstone mentions her as having been hired by Mossad to do several trips to Palestine and save Jewish people just before World War II. One trip was from January 3 to 12, 1938 with 65 passengers

Aliyah Bet is a term for illegal immigration, also called Ha'apalah, which was conducted at the initiative of immigrant groups in Europe, the Jewish Agency and in some cases with the help of the United States and even the Nazis. In Palestine, Aliya Bet was organized beginning in 1939 by the "Mossad l'Aliya Bet" to bring immigrants to mandatory Palestine after immigration was restricted by the British White Paper of 1939.

Illegal immigration began on January 12, 1938, when the "Poseidon" brought 65 illegal immigrants who disembarked at Avihayil. At this time, the Jewish Agency operations were under the command of the Halutz department. Up to 1938, about 8,000 Jewish immigrants had entered Palestine illegally, to circumvent quotas that were already in effect under British emergency regulations before the White Paper of 1939.

Απ'οσο γνωρίζω ναι. Βέβαια μπορεί να ήταν νηολογημένα σε διαφορετικά λιμάνια και ίσως αυτό να επέτρεπε την ταυτόχρονη παρουσία του ίδιου ονόματος.

So, this Poseidon or Possidon was built as the yacht Sea King by Robert Duncan or Port Glasgow in 1877. She had 237 tons, a length of 44.3 m and a width of 6.3 m

She came to Greece around 1905 and was named Poseidon. Her history appears in message No 1 above.

By 1930 she was listed in Lloyd as Papadiamandis and belonging to G. Tripos who I dare imagine was the father of J. Tripos of the 1950s

In 1931 she transferred to the Cabanellis Line and named Alexandros Papadiamantis. According to Tzamtzis, she was forced to retirement in 1932. Lloyd shows her broken in 1934 at the age of 57...

Ειχα ξεχασει την απαντηση σου εδω. Αλλα σημερα, ψαχνοντας κατι αλλο βρηκα τις ειδησεις για την συγκρουση του μικρου ατμοπλοιου ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ με το κοττερο ΓΟΗΣΣΑ του Εμπειρικου και την απωλεια αυτου καθως και τον τραγικο θανατο του τοτε διευθυντου της Εθνικης Τραπεζης Ιωαννου Βαλαωριτη. Παραθετω λοιπον την πληρη περιγραφη του γεγονοτος γιατι μας δινει περισσοτερες πληροφοριες για τον ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝΑ

Το πλοιο:
• ηταν μικρα θαλαμηγος που συμφωνει και με τα στοιχεια του Sea King
• ειχε ταχυτητα 7 κομβων
• εκανε πραγματι δρομολογια στην Σαλαμινα!

Ένα απόκομα του 1924 με το πλοίο να κάνει το δρομολόγιο Πάτρα-Πειραιά για την "Ατμοπλοϊα Βορείων Σποράδων".
