[Nicholas Peppas]

Anatoli was a small passenger ship that appeared in the Greek seas immediately after World War II.

She was built as a yacht, the Tuscarora, in June 1897. I first talked about her in relation to Glaros in http://www.nautilia.gr/forum/showpos...3&postcount=11
She had 565 tons and was 55.3 m long and 8.2 m wide

The yacht was property of Ms. Elizabeth Balfour Clark of Largs, Scotland. In 1911 she passed to a Spanish owner and became Goizeko Izarra and in 1922 to Godfrey Williams of London who reversed her name to Tuscarora.

In 1924 she went to Almeric Paget, Lord Queenborough and in 1928 to William G Macbeth of Comrie. Finally, she was sold to John Urquhart of Glasgow in 1936.

She became part of the Ministry of Transport of Great Britain in 1941 and at that time her wonderful interior was removed and sold to private dealers. She was decommissioned in 1946 and seems to have found two Greek owners, Diamantopoulos and G. Pyliaros. She was named Anatoli

In her early Greek days she was active in Paronaxia and Laconia as the attached schedule of December 11, 1948 shows.

On January 13, 1949, she starts serving NE Greece along with Messaria as indicated here

Then on August 11, she participates -like many other ships- in the Dekapentavgoustos runs

Yet, Anatoli disappears rather abruptly at the end of March 1950 and we find the following message on May 13, 1950.

Anatoli was converted into a cargo ship in 1950 and was renamed Eugenia. Later she worked for Saudi Arab interests until 1968. She sank in 1968 on passage from Port Sudan for Jeddah carrying dura seed.

Bit confused as on the Miramar List she was built as TUSCARORA and changed to GOIZEKO IZARRA in 1911 and then ANATOLI in 1946, On the clydebuilt site she is shown as a change in 1922 from GOIZEKO IZARRA to TUSCARORA?

Miramar states:

[1946 cv to cargo ship] - 11 GOIZEKO IZARRA - 23 TUSCARORA - 46 ANATOLI - 52 EVGENIA - 68 ALHELAL

When you drill down by official number the change over 1922/3? is missing. Probably just a typo on Miramar.

Yacht TUSCARORA was a merchant vessel, hired by the Admiralty as an anti-submarine yacht for use between 1940 and 1945 and based at Campbeltown, Scotland. I have seen her mentioned as TUSCARORA and also HMS TUSCARORA. So it would seem that the name change 1922 - 1946 is correct.

Mrs B's dad, on gaining promotion to Lieutenant, fought the Nazi hordes aboard the good ship Tuscarora from August 1943 to end of play.

The Tuscarora was a yacht taken into service for the duration as a submarine detection vessel. Based at Cambletown for the period in question.

She was quite elderly, Lenton & Colledge give her build date as 1897 on a Thames measurement tonnage of 597.

Το πλοίο είχε όντως αγοραστεί από το Λιβανό αλλά νωρίτερα. Η μετανομασία του σε ΕΥΓΕΝΙΑ ήταν μεταγενέστερη και δεν είχε σχέση με την οικογένεια Λιβανού.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα η Bienvenuto SS Co του Λιβανού αγόρασε το ΑΝΑΤΟΛΗ τοο 1946 και προχώρησε στη μετασκευή του. Το 1948 το πούλησε στην Πειραϊκή Ατμοπλοϊα η οποία και το δρομολόγησε στην ακτοπλοϊα. Στο τέλος του 1950 πουλήθηκε στον Μ. Εζώνη ο οποίος και το πούλησε το Μάη του 1951 οπότε και μετασκευάστηκε σε φορτηγό.

Τα στοιχεία είναι από το βιβλίο Ελληνική ακτοπλοΐα 1945-1995 του Γ.Φουστάνου.

Το Ανατολη ειναι ξεχασμενο τωρα αλλα ηταν ενα σπουδαιο πλοιο και σαν γιωτ προ του πολεμου αλλα και σαν ελληνικο ακτοπλοικο αμεσως μετα τον πολεμο.

Σαν Tuscarora ηταν ενα απο τα πιο γνωστα και ζηλευμενα γιωτ του μεσοπολεμου, μαζι με αλλα που εγιναν αργοτερα τα πλοια μας Ελβιρα, Γλαρος, Ιτεα και Αμαρυνθια.

Πραγματι το πλοιο Ανατολη ηταν ενα ονειρεμενο γιωτ οταν ηταν το Tuscarora πριν απο τον πολεμο. Να κρατησε τιποτε απο το παρελθον; Δεν ξερω; Το βιβλιο του Φουστανου εχει δυο μεταπολεμικες φωτογραφιες (σελ 98 και 99) οπου το πλοιο εχει χασει το λουστρο του. Εν πασει περιπτωσει, εδω βλεπουμε μια απο πολλες καταχωρησεις στην Καθημερινη της 25ης Αυγουστου 1948 οπυ το πλοιο εμφανιζεται σαν πολυτελης θαλαμηγος αλλα για την αγονη γραμμη Παροναξιας!
